Some cars may be going up in value Chris but that kind of implies you need to keep them long enough for that appreciation to be tangible. Have you lads ever owned a car for more than a couple of weeks I for one can’t to see what you lads are bringing to Anglesey this year
There’s loads of cars for around that money. Depends what you want from the car. I’ve had most Elise/Exige variants so I’m not against lotus in any way. I keep considering an s3 Exige.
Of the top of my head you could have
M3
Evo
Impreza
Elise
2-11
V6 Exige
Ultima
GTR
Cayman
V8 vantage
Radical
Caterham
Ect there’s loads.
The Exige isn’t really practical, I just trailered mine in the end so could go even more track focused. For cars to drive at the weekend ect and euro trips again the Exige s1 isn’t the best out there for the money.
Starting to think they look dated now next to the s2 - s3 aswel.
Like I say I’m not against lotus and I’m sure this car will sell I just couldn’t spend my money on one at that price.
When I bought my 340r, first thing I thought was it has no power, there’s just better options in my opinion.
Bell and colvile have a white s3 63 reg for £40k so only £5k more. The v6 may well lose money but that’s not how you enjoy a car. You s1 won’t make you any money by the time you add in all you insurance tax and maintenance.
Well we’re down for the GTR and Cayman GT4 but I keep thinking of swapping for either an ultima, v6 Exige or a radical rxc. Nearly bought a v12 vantage last month lol. I like to change my cars, Phil’s already sold his M2, it only had 1200 miles on the clock
My Db9 went up £5000 in the 6 months I had it. Not that I made it as I bought of a dealer for £70k sold it back to them for £66k and they sold it back on for £75k
Good work Like I said I always look forwards to seeing what you lads are gonna pitch up with,…esp because it might change up to the point you load the trailer I’m sort of hoping that you’ve got the GTR and GT4 I’d like to see how both of them go at Anglesey esp the GT4 tbh.
I’m not sure an S1 and a V6 should ever be thought of as comparative options.
I’d love a V6, but it wouldnt stir my soul like the S1 does. Each to their own.
No ones ever likely to actually make serious money on these unless they have sat on it for years. Running one takes a good amount of proactive maintenance IMO. The solid value justifies further investment.
I believe the big prices happen when people want to pay for the privilege of owning one, whether an S1, or one of the finer 911 models or whatever takes their fancy. Not because it’s the best thing out there for the money. Some prices are crazy, I certainly could afford a decent classic ford now days.
I want to see how the gtr does against the gt4 so may have to keep it just for that. The gtr will take some beating though, me and Phil both drove it and said we should of had a gtr years ago, the power is addictive and the traction is mental, I just have a feeling the brakes will let it down.
I don’t see how you can’t compare s1 to s2 or s3 (I’ve not had an s3 so could be wrong). There all the same to me and out of all the lotus I’ve had to 2 I would say we’re the best we’re the s2 supercharged car (as an all round usable car) and the 2-11.
We will, I won’t let Phil live it down if the gt4 don’t keep up. You don’t understand how much slagging off we give each other’s car manual, n/a rear drive ect ect so I’ve told him I’ll turn the boost down to give him a chance
If we were all the same it would be boring but you’re not really listing like for like. You’ve listed mainly mass produced bar one or two. Plus I don’t think many people by a 340R for pure speed, I certainly didn’t. That’s not really the point is it?
My Exige has certainly increased more in value than I’ve spent in the last two years and I can’t see it going any other way than up. I didn’t buy it to make money though but it certainly stopped me frittering it away on the usual rubbish with nothing to show for it!
Like I said it depends what you want out of the car as like you say we’re not all the same. I’ve gave you a random list of cars like you asked for all different for different use’s. It might be the fact I’ve had an Elise/Exige of some sort for 15 years now and they all drive very similar (getting board of same old car) and the early cars don’t have enough power in my opinion (may be spoilt by the Audi and Honda cars). I’m waiting for lotus to bring something new and different out, hopefully an all new Exige or something that won’t be to same old same old. I don’t use my car from one week to the next as I have another road car so don’t really need a car, I get one for enjoyment and if it needs a trailer so be it. My brother uses his for going out ect ( work van for work but no other car) so he has the Cayman gt4 and I have to say it does everything really well. He had a Cayman gts last year and if you want to spend less could have a Cayman r.
I can’t see the s1 Exige going down in price the way the market stands at the minute.
The 340r people may not buy for outright speed but I think with how far cars have moved on in the 16 years they have been made, there just underpowered now compared to other sports cars.
I was just saying that if you’re looking for an S1 Exige you’re not really going to suddenly decide that you want an M3 or others on your list instead. The only comparables are the 2-11, Ultima and the Radical. They will either increase in value or you’re not losing. The Exige V6 looking at the market you’re losing money.
I understand by the sounds you’ve done the Lotus brand but people buy cars as you know for a miriad of reasons, just look at the classic car market. It’s not just about raw speed or how far cars have come is it?
There is something special about both the 340R and the Exige which makes people want them. Rarity is another draw and in my opinion and one or two others on here they are still undervalued in the market.
Lets be honest they are still pretty nice to look at and to say they look dated now is just confusing to me?

You say that but I’m a typical buyer having owned loads of lotus’s,I’d have another s1 Exige but I wouldn’t pay s3 Exige money for one. I don’t see the value. We have sold Elise’s and Exiges to buy M3, Cayman, Radical, evos ect so I’d say that statement is wrong. People who buy an s1 Exige will have other cars on the back of there mind at a given price, your not going to pay “whatever it takes to have one”. I bought the 340r with my brother (I wasn’t that keen to have it) as we hadn’t had one and we thought it would be fun and not lose money, first track day we blew the engine, brakes were poor and it’s miles to soft so off we went modifying it. It’s just not that great a car standard, I should have just sold it rather the mod it cos all that did was cost me ££££’s.
Anyway I’m not saying there a bad car and good luck to anyone selling one or watching the prices rise it only takes one buyer.
I think there’s a small group of cars that have modest rise in value that somewhat offsets their running costs. This makes owning them easier to reconcile against a car that has running costs AND significant depreciation. These cars often seem to be low volume specialised cars that have a certain 'je ne sais quoi '. Exige/340R/211 all fall in this category as well as of course some fast Fords, rare Subarus/Mitsubishi.
Some then seem to go stratospheric when they’re last of a kind and become very collectable like air-cooled Pork, old BMW //M etc. That’s before even thinking about the investment-grade exotica Ferraris, Astons etc.
The Exige is an aspirational car for lots of guys in Lotus circles which coupled with low numbers and long-term ownership mean they’ll always command a premium.
The cars are now 16-17 years old so there exists a large spectrum of conditions/mileage out there. Low-miles pampered show cars like George/John’s have the potential to be worth a LOT of money. Guys that have always hankered after one and then find themselves in later-life in a much more affluent position will pay whatever it takes to get a minter. I think this is to compensate for the time at launch when they wanted one but didn’t have the means.
Loads may but not in such numbers Chris. Even if goes for £30-33k it’s 7-10k more than I paid for mine 3 years ago. When it goes to classic status in countries like the US or Japan who knows…
I’m with your thinking Jonny. I’ll put my neck on the line and say £50k + in 5 years for low mileage examples if not before. That’s unless the financial world has imploded again!
Couple of 100k + mileage cars there looking good at £35k ish. At least you could drive it and not worry about the mileage! Probably in the minority here but I loved the two M3 SMG’s I had, great cars.
