S1 owners - About to change my worn out discs & pads. For last couple of years have used PF pads, but CL have since come on the scene. Any views on the CLs (5 or 6?) with 4 pot fronts & standard rear calipers? Would love some new 304 Alcon front discs, but probably replacing existing AP 295s with same again.
Prefer to beat imminent VAT increase, so anyone know of any deals around?
Rob, Im using CL5+ in standard front and rear and have found them to be more consistant than RS14 - in fact been very pleased with them, better that RS14 after abuse for sure.
Only issue I had was running them in on old discs as the deposits from the RS14 needed to be “removed” first as I had some strange marking on the discs at first, on new discs you wont have that problem.
They also dont create heaps of dust like the PF pads it seems.
Martin has got a set of the CL5+ for the Orange car 4 pots and 2 pot rears in “stock” if you want to try them - Eliseshop seems to be about the lowest price …
Interesting post Rob, as I’m running PF at the moment having run RS14 for years before that.
I’ve got to admit that I loved the RS14s but the last set trashed a set of AP discs, hence I tried the PFs.
For me the PFs are too grabby, and I find myslef locking the brakes far more than I ever did with the Pagids. I’m tempted to go back so will watch this post with interest
TBH Con, once I’d ditched the oem pads 10 years ago, I’ve been happy with whatever pads I’ve used. I gradually “upspecced” them, as my track driving also slowly improved over time eg Mintex 1144/1155/1166, then SBS, followed by RS14s & latterly the PFs. The trouble with the PFs being the brake dust, & I think (although I may be completely wrong!) they are quite harsh on the AP discs. The AP discs have given great service though to be fair - 3 years of fairly heavy use on both track & road.
Me too .the PFs cured the huge vibration that several of us suffered with the RS14s but wheel locking is the compromise.
So what is the best alternative for regular calipers ?
Why dont you guys try the 308 Alcon disks, they are made of a different compound to the AP’s.
Also, give the Pagid 42’s a go! The 42’s dont ‘eat’ disks and have the depositing problems like the 14’s do. And I can assure you they work bloody well too!
As a complete outside, try the SBS stuff! I had these on my S1 Elise 160 and they worked!
All the talk says that CL6 are a bit hard on discs …
Have to say that my POV is that when you get to racing pad performance the disks will get eaten anyhow … its gotta happen really … so then the quality of the disc material becomes more critical … AP agent told me there were different steel suppliers between 3000 and 5000 series … Ive never had any issue with my 3000 rotors
I had the same problem as Con with R14 and thats why I went to CL5+ as I didnt want the dust issue of the PF pad.
I heard the CL pads are hard on discs but I have done 10k miles using RC6’s on Alcon discs and have not seen much wear at all.
The RC6’s are fantastic, but squeal like mad unless hot. Apparently the RC5+'s are similar in performance but without the squeal.
The best bit about them is that the Coefficient of friction on them is pretty constant regardless of temperature, so you don’t get caught out with cold pads on track. Huge plus IMO.
