Big power boys......is it worth it....?

Hello all

Been a lurker here for years now…but feel almost part of the family since I was lucky enough to meet Jonny, Ade and a few others last year at Spa with BaT - can’t wait until August !

Thinking about getting some serious work done at sinclaires (or what ever their name is now - been very pleased with their work for the last few years) in the next few weeks, but I have a couple of questions first if I may…

  1. For those with say 300(+) BHP - can you keep up with 911 GT3s - I know it’s driver / track dependent etc but up say the Kemmel straight are you able to keep up, also, what speeds are you pulling before braking…mines currently Gotham tuned but with standard interwarmer (2bular back box and TRD air box) and I reckon I was pulling 125ish last year.

  2. If I do get the chargecooler / smaller pulley / 2bular manifold etc fitted and then mapped I’m planning to get the Jubu 3rd / 4th gear set fitted as a preemtive strike. Question is has anyone heard of this set up failing yet ? and have you noticed any “issues” with the slightly higher gearing for these gears ? (not worried about extra noise etc) Is there something better out there for not much more dosh ? I like the look of the sequential options but it seems they are $$$ and not really tested yet ?

  3. Front brakes - thinking of just upgrading the disks (Alcon 308) but leaving the 2 pot callipers (with RS14) - does anyone think this is a bad idea ? I like being able to modulate the brakes as they currently are…I think the weak point for me is the EP Ali Belled disks (with RBF600) I run not the callipers…?

Thanks in advance chaps for any wisdom passed my way…

Oh, out of interest I had the car weighed last year - S2 S 220 sport and touring packs with Gotham/2bular/Ohlins/Full cage/plumbed in fire/Aircon/wireless. Came in at 937.5kg with half a tank of gas…thought that wasn’t too bad given the cage weighed a “ton” !

Sorry for the long post - got carried away given it was post 3 or whatever…

Matt

A 300bhp Exige will probably keep up with a 997 GT3 to about 120mph then it becomes an aero game where the GT3 will murder the Exige. It’s also more about the torque range than top end power. The GT3 has both where as the Exige is still only a 1.8 camry engine.

At 937Kg on a half tank your going to add another 30kg or so with the charge cooler. Bordering on a tonne fully brimmed I’d imagine it probably won’t be as quick as you’d imagine.

Stick a SC Honda or Audi Turbo in it and the game changes…

To answer your questions

  1. Nope (mostly as I drive like a girl) but as previously said the GT3’s just pull away after 120 or so, as for speed, if I was really brave through eu rouge and a bit of a tow of the car in front I did see 140 a couple of times, but mostly 135ish
  2. I haven’t heard of any failing yet. As for your upgrades, get a triple pass rad and a laminova based gear oil cooler as well, this I’m sure is also helping the gearbox stay healthy. Sadly there doesn’t seem to be any other choices, as the Honda gearbox conversion had fitment issues with non standard manifolds. Also fit an LSD as well
  3. A lot of people here now won’t use RS14’s as they seem to kill disks, otherwise any upgrade to brakes in my mind is a good idea.

and also the charge cooler upgrade doesn’t weigh 30kg more like 15-20kg and yes you will notice a substantial power difference

Now the man is talkin!! My 430 ish bhp Audi was touching 168mph up the kemmel and will piss on a GT3 and I have also seen off a few GT2’s in my time. I am talking road cars doing track days. I have kept with a race car 997 GT3 on slicks for a few laps, but they are seriously quick.

Thing to remember is the driver has a lot to do with it. A well driven GT3 is a serious piece of kit and a badly driven one is gonna be slow.

 Hey Matt…

What sort of bracket whould be used to run Alcon 308 disks with standard calipers?

Bloody hell mate ! Didn’t realise it was that quick… I’m going to NEED a pax lap when you finish the latest incarnation !!

Are these conversions “ready” for the S2 yet and do any have aircon…makes me sound like a girl but I like to keep cool and be able to demist since mine leaks like a leaky thing…

I was speaking to John at the weekend and they are ready, just out of my price range at present :frowning:

And apparently you can keep the aircon

Ooooohhh - sounds interesting - what’s a ball park drive in / drive out cost ?

Ring John @ JSR there are loads of options as well :astonished:

I was thinking the same as the one to let you use standard callipers with the larger AP disks…sounds like I’ve missed something here.

“Big Power” is not the be all & end all. Anyone who saw DaveP consistently mullering more powerful machinery over the weekend, can vouch for that! Don’t know how the boy does it, but it sure is impressive. Has he had driver training from Tarmac Terrorist, I wonder

The above Racing Gods don’t have “massive” brake set-ups either…

Dave @ seriously lotus does them I think, I’m sure that is what Pete 757 is running

Ade - back on the Jubu gears - have you noticed the wider spread from say 2nd to 3rd ? I always thought this was a little high on the standard box and with the Jubu’s it’ll be higher…?

Thanks

It was indeed one of P 757’s posts that gave me the idea so was hoping it was quite simple…

Hi Jonny - hope all is well with you. I’m looking forward to Spa again this Summer. As you can see I’m planning some more mods to make up for my lack of skill. Like what you’ve done to you’re car - I’m still holding out for aircon though, guess living in it here in Bermuda has turned me soft !

Matt

Personally I think the gear spread is better for bigger tracks, third is the most used gear exiting corners so it being taller only improves the situation, but to be honest there is very little in it.

Thanks Ade

I dont track my toy (flame suit on) so can only talk about road usage. The higher power makes the car a lot more drivable on the road as the higher torque saves you having to rev the nuts off it. If you do tune it and go for the chargecooler setup then you may as well go for the 2.8 pulley and have 330bhp, I did my tune in stages and it was the last jump from 300 to 330 that felt the most exciting when driving. I had a gallardo call it a day after a spirited drive in the country last week so I know the car is as quick as it feels at 330 horses. If you want to save some weight go with forged alloys, swap the seats for carbon jobbies and whilst you’re at it replace the “rear window” with plexiglass. After that take up running and drive around in espadrills and your wife’s underwear
