Looks great - did the roof and engine cover come from Lotus?
The roof and engine cover are both genuine lotus items but I bought them secondhand. Engine cover was on eBay and the roof came all the way from France, advertised on pistonheads.
New steering wheel and quick release.
Because it’s a 3 hole wheel I had to get a weld on spline, I was going to have it welded straight on the column but that seemed a bit permanent! So I had a boss made up, also gets rid of the bulky spacer.
oh that’s pretty cool!
That material is from one of Dave Lee Travis’ velvet jackets
I’m not old enough to know that
Right, time for bit of an update as I’ve finally started bolting stuff back on to the car rather than taking it off.
So I wanted to get some of the eliseparts gt race uprights. I was sold on the idea at the exiges.com Anglesey trackday where I tried and failed miserably to keep up with DaveP. His car just flew round corners at speeds that mine just wasn’t able to grip at. I realise this could be down to the driver too
Anyway, a throw away remark to a seller who was selling elise bits on ebay led to me buying these
Sold to me as elise parts gt race uprights I realised after a bit of measuring they were not the “standard” items. They were made as a one off by elise parts for Adrian Neweys Red Bull exige race car, which was running 17" front and 18" rear wheels and huge discs. I’m hoping to have the caliper mounting face machined so I can use a more suitable size, 308mm all round. The rear will take the front 2 pots and I’ll be putting some ap pro5000+ 4 pots on the front. I’m also hoping to have a handbrake spot caliper mounted, as I still want to use the car occasionally on the road.
So the car was stripped of wishbones which have been zinc plated
Bling!
Then powder coated black (not so bling) and fitted with new ball joints and elise-shop bearings
Gave the coilovers a good clean with wd40. Wishbones fitted with new bolts and washers from elise-shop. The springs and anti roll bar really letting it down!
Other parts I have collected, new skf bearing packs, 4 pot Goodrich brake lines, elise parts alloy plinths, seriously lotus wheel studs and bells, ap racing bolts…
next up the elise parts steering arms and bump steer kit.
Front end going together, still needs to have the caliper mounting face machining down.
Just had time to put a scabby civic wheel…
tad low methinks. I’ll adjust and play with ride heights when the time comes.
Still need to get some driveshafts the front calipers and a set of wheels and a few more bits and bobs. really hoping its not going to be to much longer though.
Looking good
Looking good bud - did you miss out on an Anglesey space or do you not reckon you’d be ready?
Cheers:)
Yeah i didn’t think I’d be ready so I’m going to miss it this year:( had such a good time last year, really jealous of you all.
That’s a real shame. I hope we can see you on circuit later in the year. Quite a few of us will be at the BaT noisy day at the end of the year at Donny,…hopefully before then though eh!
Try and get over anyway if you can buddy… more than happy to take you out for a few laps
Yeah I definitely want to get out on track sometime this year even if it is October!
Thanks Dave:)
Looking good. Now I do like the S2 uprights, I think I’ll be going the same way at a later date.
It’s finally back in one piece!
It’s one thing buying all the bits but another trying to get them to work. I’ve already explained the uprights, my next problem was the elise parts steering arm rod ends. They hadn’t been threaded deep enough so didn’t go on the steering rack far enough when I tried to set up the tracking. No problem, a trip to my friendly engineer sorted that out for free by tapping them deeper.
Next problem, the nearside driveshaft… having been using the Martyn Tinker s1 driveshafts, trouble free, for the last few years, it seemed logical to me that I could just buy his s2 shafts and some new outer c.v joints and all would be well. WRONG!! Driver side fitted fine but when it came to putting the passenger side in it was quite obviously to long, by quite a long way. 20mm to be exact. After some to’ing and fro’ing it became clear that I was of course wrong and my engine was too far over the passenger side :tsk either way I wouldn’t be getting my money back and to cure the problem I would have to buy a new engine mount off him… In the mean time I’d been in touch with a few other people who had had the same problem. I tried to find someone who could machine it to save me buying a new shaft but as it was already hardened nobody I phoned could do it.
To cut a long story short I ended up buying a driveshaft from stark automotive. Geoff very kindly sent me a tech drawing with dimensions of their shafts and it suited my car perfectly.
Some things have worked a treat, this box turned up from B.G Developments
Inside
I sent them my front uprights so they could machine the exact amount off the caliper mounting face. They also made me a custom bell with slightly different offset to normal as I’m using 310mm x 28mm rotors. I thought this was rather cool!
Fitted
For what its worth, the dreaded drive shafts
Just realised I haven’t taken any pictures of the rear set up. Nothing special, 308mm discs and bells with the original 2 pot caliper. Still haven’t found a satisfactory handbrake solution.
getting there…
Today it was finished and I drove it a celebratory 25 meters or so to give it a wash.
This of course is not the end… I now need to change the brake master cylinder. Although they work the pedal feel is awful. The speedo doesn’t work and I need a handbrake. I had a go at the tracking myself and although its good the car would benefit from a proper geo.
Looking very very cool, regardless. Superb job.
Looks good and OZ wheels on an s1, lovely. What’s the ride height looks nice and low?
Thanks I have always liked the idea of 135r oz racing wheels on an s1, also fancy some of the forged 5 spokes.
Ride height is set at 85mm at the front and 95mm rear with about 90kg ballast in the drivers side (yes I’m heavy but it’s all muscle…) and 75-80kg in the passenger side.
Looks even lower with all that in there
Looking good buddy !
Thanks Dave, and thanks for answering all my questions!
