Avon ZZR

Are these a possible alternative to AO48’s.

They will replace AO48’s in Elise Trophy next year.

Production won’t be available until December.

Anyone tried these yet? I’m gonna give a set a go as my 888 are dead.

I was just reading thishttp://www.avonmotorsport.com/resource-centre/tyre-applications/lotus-on-track, seems they need much higher pressures than 888/48’s.

Might need higher pressures due to sidewalls not being as stiff as the 48’s, I could also be talking a loud of shizzer.

Benja, (and all)
I have driven on the ZZR at Mallory in the dry and Oulton in the wet and the dry on the ET Trophy Elise. In the dry they are great, As much grip as the A048’s “M” and a bit more feel too IMHO  stiffer side wall too like the 48 “M’s” so will be a bit harsher on the road that the LTS 48’s and the 888’s. but in the wet that’s another matter. I didn’t feel like they had as much grip as the 48 M 48 LTS or the 888 but they were controlable and all 4 wheels seamed to slide at the same rate, So the car felt quite balanced. Might all be different on a hight power Exige, but I would say that they are a definite contender. We were told by the Avon guys supporting the races to go for 32 psi hot all round and no less that 24 psi cold, so they are a bit higher that the 48’s and you would need to monitor them a bit closer on a hot track day but then tyres are important feature in the driving experience so the should be checked regularly throughout any track/race day.
All IMHO of course. I’m sure other people will have their opinion too.

Cheers Steve

Ta Steve that’s perfect.

All a bit lastminute.com but have ordered a set and going for a hoon at Bedford on the SW circuit this Friday with EVO mag if anyone fancies it…

Will post up how I get on with them.

Wish my car was quiet enough for Bedford :frowning:

As for the Avons, those tyre pressures seem extremely high in comparison to 888s I run them at 26psi hot, anymore and they get “floaty” for want of a better word 31 seems very high :astonished:

Yeah well there is only two noise meters on the SW circuit and in my experience its only the one out of the hairpin past the straights that catches you and I just short shift to fourth. Still makes for a fun Friday eve in my view…

I share your concern about going all hovercrafty at those pressures, well we’ll see huh, I’ll report back.

32 Psi hot,was the suggested pressure from the Avon motor sport guys who come to the LOT races. They did also say to NEVER run below 24 Psi cold on the ZZR. I will stick to that until I have more track day time to experiment with them a bit more myself.

This is the key piece of information for those coming from 48/888’s…

Mine cold are ~19psi as I never adjust them to use to drive home after a trackday :astonished:

At BoT getting a set fitted. Looks like I’ll find out what they’re like in the wet,…forecast for the rest of the day including trackday tonight is pissing down :frowning:

Just got back, will try and do more of a write up and post some vids over the weekend. About the ZZR’s :

First time I’d been in the car since Rockingham. I’m glad I found the time to change boots as the extent to which I’d totally bonfired the rears became clear when they were off the car…ooops

First impressions on the road, noticeably smoother and no vibrations at any road speeds. Perhaps because they’d be freshly balanced but noticeable nonetheless. Nice and positive feel on the road.

There was a constant drizzle at Bedford. Not standing water, but after a dry week and lots of rubber down it was seriously like an ice rink. The ZZR’s felt really progressive with a nice smooth transition from grip, to slip, to grip. Once I got dialled in, I really got on with them. They gave a really confident feel in the car so that you knew where you were and could accurately predict what was about to happen. Yes basically I was sliding it around like a nutcase

More as a result of that confidence that any actual differential in grip, I seemed to be making significantly quicker progress than most of the rest of the field. Indeed, the chief instructor and some other learned looking blokes came up to me after a session and asked what tyres I was running as they been very impressed with the speed I’d been carrying. They seemed pretty surprised that I was running track day style cut slicks…

The conditions were such that I did not really play about with pressures as it was impossible to get much heat in them. For reference I ran them at about 28 cold and they seemed to get up to about 30. I probably could have gone a bit lower I guess.

So based on wet performance I’d recommend them. They do feel different to 888/48’s but as I say once you’ve dialled yourself in I thought they worked well. Roll on Donny next month where hopefully we’ll see how they go in the dry…

great stuff Ben - many thanks for the excellent reportage.

Thanks Ben. Made my mind up then. When I’ve munched through this set I’m going to get a set of these

So here’s a vid of a couple of laps from Fri night.

It did strike me that a vid of me sliding around like a hooligan may not be the best advert for ZZR’s but :

  • it was properly properly slippery
  • my car is a bit of handful in the wet
  • driver is a ham fist

Anyways , here you go :

Bedford SW Vid Clicky

Nice video mate, wish I had known earlier about that. Look on the Autodrome site earlier in the week and it never said anything about it.

Would have love to have got out in those conditions with you.

Cool vid Ben !
I think you’re gonna love your sloppy diff

lol Benja that vid looks well fun
