Interesting!

They dont do a 195 front only 205 but not the end of the world though, well spotted that man.
Someone on Seloc had posted it up, so I just copied across.
Interesting. I couldn’t find a treadwear rating though, to see how soft they really are.

Yeah, I’m with Ian on this one. I was astonished when I found out the wear rating on the LTS branded tyres. It has to be a critical factor when considering any alternative.
Interesting indeed. Good spot.
I’m still with Ian on this one - we need to know the treadwear rating for these tyres. From previous discussion on this forum I recall that A039(LTS) and A048(LTS) both have a rating of 60 which is very soft (50% of tyres fall inthe 200 -400 range) and only work because of the lightness of the Lotus and the fact that they are primarily for road use and don’t get that hot. (I remember Randy saying that A039s with their smaller tread block do not recover well from high temp, the A048 doing better in this respect and therefore being a more suitable track day tyre. I think 60 is even lower than than the rating on the Yokos used for the LoT Racing series -it would make sense for a tyre in a racing series to need to be a bit harder to cope with the heat generated.WIKIPEDIA has some info on Treadwear ratings (a US requirement).
So, does anyone know what the treadwear rating is for these tyres?
You spurred me on Mike, so I rang them. The ZZR’s treadwear rating is 20!!! Same as a Cosworth Caterham.
Costs are about 170+VAT a tyre.
The good news is that the mould is the same as the far more road oriented ZZ3, which means the tread depth is likely to be about 7mm, rather than the 5mm of the Yoko 48.
Apparently ‘Wastegate Chater’, an EVO rag, reviewed it against the 48 and a Dunlop recently and said (perhaps unsurprisingly) that it had more grip.
I believe Toyo 888s treadwear rating is 100, which is probably a good compromise over the Yoko 48’s 60 for a bit more life and decent grip.

I rang them earlier today too - spoke to Tech Dept. I was told that because they are a low volume tyre, they haven’t been put through treadwear rating tests. Was also told that most trackday Caterham boyz go for the softer CR500 tyres.
Mmm… will do some more digging around & report back
Okey dokey - not so interesting after all
Although Avon “intended” to make 205x50x16, they never did. Apparently demand for the ZZR generally has not been been great (due to price!!!), so it’s unlikely they’ll produce any more.

if you could afford to do it (not me), the best way would be to keep the same softer tyre and have tehm shaved and pre-scrubbed from new to reduce the heat problems/help with the cycle rates…
They dont last long enough for me now though to go taking rubber off before I have even started!!..

Well a very nice man called James said he went and spoke to the Tech dept and called me back, how odd. I got the impression they were using the ZZ3 mould and CR500 rubber.
As far as I knew, any tyre produced for the road had to have a treadwear rating, traction and temp index. Anybody know different?

Ian
The info in my last post didn’t come directly from Avon.
Any chance you can call them back, & ask about availability of the 205x16" & 225x17", plus prices please?
TIA
I’m seriously thinking about giving the Kumhos, which Uldis rates, a go, as my rear 48s are pretty well worn.

Ian, I think it’s a US requirement and, according to Wikipeia, manufacturers lie about the rating to impress customers, e.g. for a track/racing tyre they will tend to quite lower than actual but for a road tyre they tend to quote higher to indicate a long life. Apparently the rating tests are carried out by the manufacrurers themselves rather than a US gov’t agency…
It would be good if these tyres are ‘right’ and readily available. I must get some rears soon.

Personally, I won’t be mixing tyres from different manufacturers, or models from the same maker. I’ll be staying with the Yokos, or trying the Toyo or Kuhmo track tyres if I can’t get Yokos.

When I get a chance I most certainly will.

Totally agree Rob. If they’re suitable I shall buy a full set but it is the rears which are nearest the end of their life.
Just ordered a set of Toyo 888 - will give them a go at Oulton next Thursday.

Interested in what you think of these… am thinking of giving them a try also… there seems to be mixed opinion on them… certainly on the S2 anyway…

TBH, I’ve only heard positive feedback from those who’ve tried them. Can you recall who’s not been happy, & why?
