Echo, everything said the day was mega, track was fab.
I landed at 8.30 all ready to go in my Elise, after not having turned a wheel since a complete build from the tub upwards. I was first out on the sighting laps with two corners in I had serious miss fire , after dropping a gear to try and make it clear, it gets worse, ah! Thatll be the traction control that we’ve not had time to set up , a flick of the switch and it clears: I guess I wont need it anyway with 160bhp in the dry .
The time comes to try it out in anger , first lap feels good but the brakes need bedding in and the tyres dont feel good! Four laps in and starting to pick the pace up but the tyres are horrid so I decide to come in and check them.
Pressures are right, but I think they might have gone a little hard; the date stamp says 2003 , hmmm!! oh well, lesson learnt.
Second session I let my pal Phil out in the car, he’s not driven one on circuit before, after about ten laps he comes in with a big smile and asks me to find him one immediately.
We give the car a quick check over and I go out for a while, it feels better and better with each lap, as I gain more confidence as the morning goes by. Phil has another shot then I hand it over to Andy Dolan, Elise trophy regular for analysis, he settles in the car and promises to return it in one piece ! This from the guy that kept me busy all last year repairing his race car was not confidence inspiring, but I value his opinion as the most mechanically unsympathetic person I have ever met .
The laps roll by as we watch him drift round, on to the start finish straight on every lap! After what seems like thirty minutes I start to think he may have to do a drive by refill. Yep thats Andy .
He finally rounds the corner in to the pits and stops to tell me how it went, whats that? the alternator light is on, oh! I hadnt noticed that, no s**t! we lift the bonnet to investigate and see that the main live feed for the alternator has fractured! A quick repair and were back out again, but after half a lap the car fills with smoke nooooooo , at least the fire extinguisher is armed and ready to go, we trundle back to the pits and have a look, but the alternator is fried ! Game over!
Oh well its lunch time now, all in all I was more than pleased with car, it shows real potential.
The rest of the day was spent catching up and abusing Als, Stus and Andys cars.
Thanks for a great day Rob, roll on the next one.
