I wandered over to your car a few times but couldn’t find anyone to chat to. A pax ride would have been brilliant, you’ll have to let me know if you do snetterton or I’ll wait till next year!
Right so the Southern Convoy worked out well which to be honest was pretty unprecedented. The usual gang plus Graham, Richard, Tim’s Dad (Neil), Ade’s missus+kid and his mate Steve all assembled and ready to roll at Telford on time(ish), just a shame we missed Ray by a few mins. We also managed to lose Neil and Graham somewhere on the A5 into Snowdonia and they somehow ended up on the A55 We also lost Richard whose coolant leak problems would ultimately call time on his fun (sorry bud). I guess its not sounding like it actually went so well anymore , but compared to previous years… Anyways, those remaining, congregated at a friendly tyre place at the turn-off onto the EVO triangle. With me leading, we heading onto the triangle. The first leg was slow as we were stuck behind traffic but the return leg was magic and we all had a fantastic drive, its clear why the EVO team favour it as a test destination! A worthy detour for anyone considering it.
After an evening catching up with the lads we had the traditional 70mph (precisely) procession down the A55. Rob had previously asked me if I’d consider taking over organising the event and since I’d agreed, I was ready for this to be announced. I was however not ready to be given the ConMcl Red Caliper! I never thought posting irreverent shite on the internet would win me anything but there you go It does mean a lot to me though as I’m passionate about our community and privileged enough to have called Con a mate. So a genuine thanks to Rob for thinking that I’m worthy. I’ll do my utmost to do a good job for next year’s event but if 2015 ends up being anything like the day we just enjoyed then I’ll be happy. I’ll have to find out what kind of ritual sacrifice to the weather gods is necessary as it is just unbelievable the number of years we’ve enjoyed dry exiges days. I’ll keep you all up to date with plans.
Like quite a few on here, my car has had quite considerable changes over the winter and I was seriously rusty having not been on a dry track since Rockingham last April The car felt properly sorted though. Obviously the change in power delivery was front and centre to the changes and whilst I get used to it I’d say I was probably slower than last year. Whereas before you could be more heavy-handed with deploying the power and large areas were taken flat, now the power needs to be managed and metered steadily. The car felt really deterministic, predictable and sure-footed though and I absolutely loved it, although considerable respect is now required No doubt once my brain has been recalibrated we should be able to make reasonable progress on forthcoming trackdays. Massive thanks to Matt Bentley Racing who did such a fantastic job on the refresh; the power the setup, the attention to detail all combined to make an awesome little machine - recommended I Need to work on my driving which was typically scrappy so apologies to DaveP, Tim and Graham (Bacon’s mate) who had to experience it first hand. Seat time is what I really need, I know that…
I had pax laps with both DaveP and Gav and was reminded what capable machines they’ve both built and what talented drivers they both are, thanks lads really memorable… I also really enjoyed my time on circuit with Ian too, as we hammered around in formation getting some video footage. I’ll work something up over the next few nights but I love being on circuit with Ian, he really makes that NA Honda S1 fly.
Jonny/Sarah and the team at BaT deserve a special mention. The event ran by the numbers and BaT generously donated the £250 in collected pax fees to Con’s nominated charity. This will join the monies that are raised from T-Shirt sales and fund-matching. It should end up quite a tidy sum, again I’ll keep you updated.
I’ve rambled on enough but finally as Rob has already said thanks to everyone who attended for making it the perfect trackday. A huge spread of machines and experience yet not a single stoppage all day and to my knowledge barely a feather ruffled in disagreement. Long may it continue.
Sounds as though you had a brilliant time at Anglesey, I am looking forward to next year as Ben said lets hope the weather is going to be kind again.
Any chance of posting up some more photo’s of the day, would be good to see some of you peeps and cars in the paddock.
I do hope this event will continue for many years to come
I do feel I need to add thanks from Steve (Clio Cup) he had the best day ever, his first full track day in the Clio, I’d like to say fault less, but I can’t, it kept boiling it’s power steering fluid!
The BaT photo guys took some great pictures and it appears it regularly only need 3 wheels on the floor to make it around the corner LOL
Right got some time to sit down and write up my thoughts, having just cleared up from the obligatory bank hol family BBQ.
I’ll make no secret of the fact I was quite anxious on the lead up to the weekend; not so much a fear of (yet) another smash, but more that reliability gremlins would see me sidelined (seems Ade took that bullet for us) and put a serious downer on my relationship with DK03. Can take the downs if you get the highs too, and thankfully they were plentiful this weekend gone!
Previous weekend I’d washed it, melted and replaced a relay and generally gone at it with the torque wrench. Tuesday saw a trip to Cosworth and back for work, so perfect excuse for a little run to see whats what, and I could bail on the run thursday should it need fixing. Thankfully, while there are a few tick tick tick noises and some new rattles all was well.
See Ben’s write up for thursday, just add lots of coolant (f’ing cheapo ‘OBP’ header tank to go in bin) and oil (leaking JIC fiiting) checks along the way. Now I’m not one to personify cars, calling them ‘she’ etc, but I did catch myself saying “just get me to the TD and through at least of of the day and I’ll fix all the gremlins” while patting the drivers side sill. A slight scare from a chattery set of pads in the n/s front caliper, but otherwise held up fine. We did however loose my dad en route, but hey he had the satnav and comfortable ride. BEERS! and damn did they taste good; great to see some familiar faces and to meet some new ones.
Hearty breakfast at the circuit, missing the sighting laps while I faffed about. However out onto circuit and it’s just as good as I remember it.
Great write-up Tim and fantastic to see you, your Dad and your fantastic car on circuit (without some ‘also-ran’ clueless racer knocking you off!).
Car washed and put away yesterday which took an age due to ‘helpers’ and the constant stream of people who stopped as they walked by to talk to me about the car. Just some video to post, I have quite a bit,…had a look last night and wow Gav’s car looks good on circuit! I also have lots of footage following IDG
Ok, so fingers are starting to work again (not helped by having to fix a shed roof when I got back)…
There’s nothing really to add. Great times! Thanks all.
No red flags, very few issues (JohnS even solved a small one of mine by waving a breaker bar/wand at my car!), lots of smiles, fantastic weather, great journeys. TICK!
I look forward to future ones with gusto.
Ian
Ps. Ben looking forward to the footage, thanks Jonny, loved yours.
Thanks! It turns out it was indeed the radiator, so there’s a new triple pass version and new silicone hoses now sitting up front. Should be a slight upgrade, I guess! Anyway, all set for Spa on Monday, so fingers crossed I get more than sighting laps in.
Adobe Premiere came free with the camera I bought and I got a bit carried away My ancient old Macbook nearly melted trying to render it! Anyways 5mins of footage is now up on Vimeo. There was lots of footage to choose from, especially of me and Ian doing formation flying for the benefit of the camera
