3rd Gear Again

Anything would help, but to give you an idea how much heat dissipation seems to be required, I have had to get my proalloy rad changed to triple pass since adding the gearbox cooler, I never had engine temp problems prior to adding the cooler. On really hot days at places like Spa my engine temps would now go above 100 whereas they used to be low 90s.
Also to be honest a lot of the cost is in materials such as the pump and laminova. The pump is an electric version of a regular gear based oil pump not a diaphragm based one.
I do think you could make a cheaper version with a cheap pump and a rad in the side pod and I did consider this but I didn’t like the lack of reliability of the cheaper pumps and then no idea if it was working or not :frowning:

So, Essex have some Jubu gears that I would have assumed are fine, however this thread has concerned me a bit around a potential drop in quality / new supplier of the original gears… Does anyone have any idea if the gears currently being supplied are reliable?

Also I am guessing from the comemnts here that having a cooler will make a real difference to the durability of the gears? - I didn’t realise the oil getting hot would make that much difference!

ade - Good to know it seems to work then! Hopefully as I have the triple pass rad already I should be ok…

Give Dave a call at Seriously about the gears he seems to know more than most

When I got my proalloy rad they didn’t do a triple pass (I had one of if not the 1st theyt made) as it didn’t seem the yota powered car was going to need it and until I fitted the oil cooler it didn’t…

Dave … I’m goin insane ere … Drexler switch the freakin cnc machine on ??

My only other option is to put the car back to 260 and sell :frowning:

Well I am now considerably poorer but have a working gearbox as the guys at Essex had a set for me… No idea if they are as good as they used to be or not, but they have a 12 month warranty so I’ll thoroughly test them in the very near future…

Had an oil cooler with dedicated rad fitted as well, so hopefully they should be OK…

I’ll keep you posted!

Excellent news Rez

Have there ever been any failures on factory standard 260 cars or is it just the modified cars above 260bhp?

A friend of mine broke his 3rd gear with a standard 240bhp car.

Was that on track or road?

Do you mean with standard gears or the Jubu + cooler?

As far as I am aware there have been few if any failures with the Jubu ones + cooler for track day cars up to ~300bhp. They have a 12 month warranty so should be well tested by the time the warranty expires. I imagine if you are full on regularly racing the story may be different as obviously the stresses are considerably higher…

Standard gearbox seems to be generally ok up to 260ish bhp, for road and occasional light tracking, but seems to suffer quite a few failures with heavy tracking even at 260bhp or less - at least based on threads like this one.

Guys a E153 gearbox is the answer with a supercharger turned up…

These prices look quite reasonable??

Do you know how easy it is to fit, and how much stronger than the standard one is it?

Hey Frank ,do you know if the C64 quaife diff will fit in the E153 box ?

Ratios are to long for a SC car check before you dive in, there needs to be some much better ratios before an E153 will be any good for us :frowning:

Wrong ade, they are tall for a large turbo setup not a supercharger, a supercharger will love the tall gears…
The 95 E153 comes with a LSD standard so there if no need for a Quaife

makes these prices seem even better

ade i’m sure rogue would be happy to talk about retios

Frank we have been through this before, post the MPH at 8000rpm for each gear and allow people to make up their own mind, personally I would like shorter gearset than I currently have but with a taller 1st, this way it would pack the ratios a little tighter and give me better acceleration through the gears.

On track

Yeah E153 ratios are too long for a track car. If you could pull the limiter in 5th it would be banned over land, as I think you will break the sound barrier!
