Winter engine refresh

I know it’s far from winter, but it’s never too early to start planning your off season repairs.
I have a problem with my #1 cylinder due to a spark plug meltdown so I had planned on pulling the head and shipping it to your side of the pond for some specialty port work.
While the motor was apart I’m thinking that a bottom end refresh along with a proper balancing of the rotating assembly would be in order.
I’m interested in moving up to 1.9L sleeves and pistons. Could someone tell me the best place to source the needed parts for this upgrade? Also any advice on other mods to do while the motor is out and apart? (Besides putting a Honda in it’s place )

My current configuration is a standard VHPD with Piper 1444 cams, venier pullies, over sized valves (not sure exactly what spec), Emerald ECU, custom exhaust and air box.
There’s about 13k on the car, 2-3k on a full rebiuld by H.R.Owen (spun rod bearing #3) New crank, rod, rings, bearings.

Can the replies please wait - I need to dash out & buy a case of Buds, & some popcorn

What Pesky means is that you’ll probably be interested in getting advice from Dave Andrews (Dave_Andrews) and Simon Erland (KingK_Series), but they don’t exactly get on so other responses to this thread could get interesting.

If you have a spare week have a good trawl through the K-series section, you’ll get the picture.

Ian

I know all about the Dave/Simon drama threads, I think I’ve read them all no matter how painful at times.

I just haven’t seen anyone mention exactly where to source the parts for a 1.9L build.

Besides, the K-series thread catagory has been a bit dead lately…

I do plan on assembling the motor myself. I was somehow under the impression that there were 1.9L sleeves and pistons available for the job.
I agree with you on the Scholar “welded block”, I am looking for something that I can do here in the States using a competent machine shop to do any block machining that may need to be done. I would like to avoid having to ship my entire engine over.

So should I just stick with the 1.8L configuration and concentrate on the proper balancing of what I’ve got?
Or are you getting close to completing your work on the 2.0L version?

Mike,

Have a chat with Dave Andrews or drop Steve Butts a PM about the 1.9k from Scholar. Steve Butts has run this engine for some time without any issue with the block or pistons (he had a rod let go recently unfortunately). I wouldn’t take the comments from Simon as the only feedback without discussing with others as unfortunately he doesn’t seem very objective in his comments on anything from DVA/Scholar.

The other option is to speak to PTP. Not sure on the quality as only ever seen the full engine built up on a shipping pallet at PTP I also don’t know anyone personally who has used their engine but it is another option.

Importantly both the Scholar and the PTP 1.9k’s do actually exist at the moment and have been seen and used by others.
