Whooshing! gone! Stinky smell now!

Hi folks

My aircon has decided to pack in again.

However just after it decided to pack in I noted a sound that was like a can of marbles being dropped on a ceramic floor ( it sounded almost the same as detonation when engine tuning ) and an acrid burning smell like clutch.

Now if I keep the revs below 4k ( where is the fun in that ) its file, above it the smell returns.

After removing the arch liner ot the offside I noted some melted plastic deposits.

I am of course assuming A/C compressor , but any ideas specifically what part has died or do I buy a whole new unit?

I suspect its a whole new unit and will be the GDP of a developing country for a spare in true Lotus style so possibly might look at the A/C delete.

What kit would I need for that? I am running a smaller than standard pulley on my stupidcharger.

Thanks, as ever!

If it is the compressor don’t buy one from Lotus, silly money. It’s a Denso part and they can b3 picked up on eBay for under £100. If you need it I may still have the part number.

I need! Please and thank you!

Denso 447220-6364, SCSA 06C, 1J 201

As found in Toyota Corolla 2001-2007?

That’s the one.

Scsa 06c 447220 6364 10g 5276

Some of the above may be a serial number rather than a part number. The 10g 5276 may be a serial number, unique to each pump.

It may also appear as hfc134a … but that’s th3 fluid type not the pump. I found my new one listed under the fluid type.

Should be some on eBay.

Brilliant! Thanks

Confirmed.

Compressor has burnt out.

Probably the clutch, if you can buy that on its own. There is nothing in the compressor to burn, it’s a simple scroll pump compressor. Mine blew a gasket and leaked.

I am going to A/C delete I think Keith. Its been more hassle than worth so far!

Andy, you have your ups and downs with this car ,but i am sure once youre driving it they all just fade away.Really wanting to s/c mine so maybe in touch for advice and to take a peak at you car in the future

Its been “fun”

All is forgiven once I drive.

More than welcome to pick my brains about the trials and tribulations of this car.
