Do you think he’s learning to left foot brake ? I can’t see how you could use the clutch with your right foot and think its the brake .
He’s probably used to an automatic but you would be amazed how many people do exactly the opposite of what you ask them when under pressure

You would think he would right foot brake in an auto , amazing if he’s missed the big peddle in the middle with his right foot .

It’s possible he would have his left foot on the footrest and is used to the first pedal to the right of that being the brake. As its the clutch, his brain may just have assumed that the brake didn’t seem to be working and not that his pumping was all in vain…a bit like Dad.
