sorry to be thick, but in the who’s online box, you get registered members, guests and “spiders” what are spiders?

AFAIK, Spiders are users who ‘hide’ their identity and are not registered forum users… 
This take me back to my post of last week. I wasn’t showing up when I logged on. Now I am. I also wondered what spiders were, thanks for the info.
