So it’s been a while since I treated the car to a bit of extra TLC. New clutch, harness and harness bar this time last year and more recently a set off R888s that have yet to see action. The shiny steering wheel is becoming bothersome and with track days beckoning I’d prefer a bit more grip.
And yes, I have heard of the Internet, I have some respect for self sufficiency - I even googled wheel restoration, and I actually have a spare near new standard wheel - but the truth is I have a touch of the upgrade itch
I like the idea of an alcantara wheel ala GT3RS or CSL but I don’t wear gloves so presumably that would make it too hard to keep clean. Since the driving position is pretty much perfect as it is I don’t want to mess with the wheel position in any way so removeable wheels are out also.
Looking on Eliseparts, the Momo Team and Jet seem closest to what I’m after - any opinions on these or similar ? is 280mm too small for daily use ?
OMP Trecento - as the name suggests it’s 300mm diameter and available in leather, suede or polyurethane. Fits (as do most of them) via a standard boss adaptor and keeps the central horn button.
I run a 280mm wheel, but only because im 6ft3, its not bad and you do get used to it, but if your as tall as me you wont be able to see all of the clocks.
I agree that 280mm is to small unless your forced to.
I would like to go up to a 300mm wheel but ill struggle with knee room
im 6ft 4. i put the 20mm spacer on as well… a perfect fit. makes it a bit trickier getting in and out if you leave the wheel on, but theres no bashing of knees when cornering… you can see all of the dials up untill 80mph…
Yes, i run a 50mm elise parts adapter, then a 60mm snap off kit bolted onto the that
this is my view, as you can see I can only see part of the gauges
The only thing that will maybe change is im having a set of carbon seats made which im hoping will get me even lower, this will give me a slightly better view of the gauges.
Here you can see the lengths i have gone to try and get my head lower when looking at the drivers headrest

Interesting, I’ve always struggled with space too; do you use a spacer/adapter too turbotoaster?[/quote]

Thanks mate. Are you using the tallrail from sector to reduce the seat height?
i use the tall rails, they’ve been modified with some extra holes to get the seat as far back and low down as possible because for some reason their design isn’t optimal.
Spacers are a tricky one, you can;t keep stacking spacers together so there’s a limit to how much you can bring the wheel towards you but it definitely helps, i ordered two lengths at the same time and kept the one that felt best.
A smaller flat bottomed wheel works for me - is fine on track unless you need some emergency correction to stop a spin in which case the shape of the wheel and the proximity of your knees causes a problem. On the road it’s fine unless i’m going round a mini roundabout or something in which case the knees are back in the way.
I also read about removing some of the roof trim to add another vertical inch of visibility out the windscreen and JSR sorted the mod for me, it looks factory and really makes a difference.
