"When I drive my Lotus I don't feel sick"

Didn’t really know where to post this but here I go… this is a English translation by me of a press release. I had some cancer fatalities in the family and though this was a great idea. Marten and I will bring 29% of Hollands Exige S1

"Milano MaartenMemorial 2008: Raise for Life

Cancer patients drive with 100 of Hollands most exclusive sport cars on the race track of Zandvoort

On the 5th of August 2008 the 5th Milano MaartenMemorial is beeing organised. The Maartenmemorial is an event where cancer patients are given the chance to be a passenger in 100 of Hollands most exclusive sports cars on a drive from Rotterdam to the Race track of Zandvoort for a few quick laps. The main target of this event is to let the patients forget their illness for a day. Simultaneously, funds are beeing raised for the Maarten van Sten laboratory where important cancer research is beeing done in name of the Daniel den Hoed clinic in Rotterdam.

Maarten van Sten to whom the Maartenmemorial is named, was a young engineer and car fanatic who on an early age of 27 died due to cancer. During his illness, Maarten drove his Lotus cars as long as it was possible. His remark “When I drive my Lotus I don’t feel sick” is the basis for the Maartenmemorial who is beeing organised by his friends. Of the hundred cars that will take part, there are a large number of Lotus vehicles but also a Bugatti Veyron, Ferrari F40, McLaren SLR, LCC Rocket, Spyker C8 Spyder and a Lamborghini Murcilago.

The previous editions of the Maartenmemorial raised 430.000,- and was main contributer that the Daniel den Hoed clinic could purchase a Proteomics machine. The machine is pioneering in cancer research and allows scientists to control the disease more and more. The 5th edition of the Maartenmemorial has raised 70.000 of sponsor money. Special is that a large amount has been actively recruited by the participating drivers and the amount is growing every day.

Brilliant, absolutely Brilliant!

thats superb mate, well done

Well done Rene Shows “Someone Cares”

cheers Clive

Maarten Memorial is organised by a few well known Dutch Lotus enthusiasts including Yvo Tuk.

Every year I can never quite make it but really hope to at some point.

Maarten was a really nice bloke as well.

It’ll be my third year now joining in. It allways gives you a good feeling to contribute and it is very rewarding. Though it can be mentally hard when your passenger for the day states that he/she hopes to be around for the event next year,at the end of the day…

Hats off, brilliant

My brother died in April this year, he was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer in Feb 2007, whilst he never shared my love of motorport and speed (he owned a Bentley GT at the time of his death) he never once sat beside me in one of my many trackday outings in one of the many cars I seem to have owned over the years.
I sooooo wished that I had persuaded him during the early stages of his illness to come out onto the track with me and for him, for maybe a few minutes to leave the agony of his illness behind.
Not sharing that moment with him has left a gaping hole in my heart.

He was 52 when he died.

Hats off to those Dutch guys.

Well done a very worthy charity and a great idea
I took part last year in a charity event at Bruntingthorpe organised by Asda, it was a great day and they earned quite a bit for charity with high speed passanger laps and the chance to drive an Asda lorry

If anyone in England is thinking of organising a charity event like this, please let me know i will be up for using one or more of my Lotus (unfortunately no Exige).

Hi there,

And what a lovely day it was! It started out sunny and warm at “De Kuip” in Rotterdam (Feijenoord soccerteam) where on the parking space 100 vehicles where collected and prepared for the drive. A lot of Lotus of course but again the Veyron stole all the media attention At 13:00 I meet my passenger, Bart, 21 years old and recovering from cancer. “I’m not scared so go full throttle” where his first words

A nice tour from Rotterdam to Amsterdam took us through a lot of tunnels crating a wonderful orchestra of sounds, btw, I need a new exhaust

[image]http://log.autogespot.com/08-2008/mmsnelweg/9.jpg[/image]

And what happens to me? Well only 15min on tour I pass a truck which is blasting out a cloud of black smoke straight up in the air. The open Elise in front of me gets away clean and I get a nice rain schower of a mix of cooling water and engine oil all over my car. The whole left side of the Exige turns black and sticky Lucky we had a small pitstop before Zandvoort so while my passenger was getting a drink and checking the other cars a nice shop owner sorted me out with a bucket of soapywater…

Clean and fresh we headed for Zandvoort.

What happend there you can see in the following video…with some live action by me

Maarten memorial 2008

Bart and his girlfriend had big smiles on their faces when they left. That say’s it al. Secondly the event raised 129.000.

I’ll do it al again next year.

Hi Rene,

thanks, great pictures, and totally agree on the event.

It’s great to see so many people happy on an event like this, and it’s an honour to be part of it.

Will deffo be there next year as well.

And yess there’s no excuse anymore to get a new exhaust, it should at least get you past the 107dB

hmmmm I’m thinkin about a Larini myself

Photo says all

Nice pic Nico, finnaly I must say after seeing a lot of car picture’s. The day is about the kids, but the media seemed to forget that. A 1,7 million costing car is more interesting even though there are more Veyrons in Holland than S1 Exiges

At 13:00 I meet my passenger, Bart, 21 years old and recovering from cancer. “I’m not scared so go full throttle” where his first words

Forum quote of the year!

Well done. Looks like a super day out.

Good lad, fooking right! I’ve had three torid years looking after my 6yo daughter and we’ve meet alot of children along the way…it really is brilliant what you’re doing…WELL DONE!

Time to update this old post as this year my trusty Exige S1 will take part again, piloted by my brother as I’m still on the other side of the globe.

SO IF ANYBODY WANNA SPONSOR MY CAR CONTACT ME! Website is only in dutch but I can help you out. Companies can buy 500 sponsorship with name on 1 of 3 places on my car or sponsor the whole car for 2500. All money goes to cancer research.
