What's your job?

Hi Peeps,

I’m hoping I’m not being too taboo here, but I have a genuine interest in what we all do as a job. The reason I have an interest is that I’m at a bit of a crossroads with my job and I’d like ideas for future employment. I’m currently in the RAF as an aircraft techie, managing my team of guys, diagnosing and rectifying faults etc, and have done almost 21 years. I have the option to stay in up to the age of 48 (a decade away), but I could have a full career change in a year. So, what do you do and can you describe your daily activities in laymans terms in a paragraph?

Kind regards,
Kurt

PS, Pesky, eating gravy does not qualify as a profession!!

True - it’s a vocation.

IT consultant for me, worked as a car mechanic when I left school then changed in my early 20’s

kurt = no offence but you have mistaken this site for seloc…

Steve - this is actually exigesLOC

Kurt - Technical / security architect - bit like a ‘normal’ architect but designing IT stuff.
In my head and everytime I get in the exige I am actually a racing driver though

My advice forget what anyone else does - what do you want to do, doing something you don’t enjoy just for the cash is soul destroying, well for me anyway.

In cronological order :
Restaurant Manager …2 years
Garage owner (sales/repairs) 4 years
Financial Advisor 1 year
Motor vehicle assembly @ Rover Longbridge 2 years
Gliding instructor part time 2 years
Double glazing fitting 5 years
Electronic circuit board manufacture 5 years
Property rental + renovations 10 years and current
HGV driver 4 years and current

A long list !

Kurt,

I found this book very helpful when deciding my mid-life career change but I was lucky and ended up working as a motor sports events organiser…

WHAT COLOUR IS YOUR PARACHUTE

Well worth a read though. Take a break and read it on a sun lounger on a beach somewhere.

Never had a proper job, or so some say.
Journalist from age 16. Still at it… Fancy being a small white van man, though…

Mechanical design engineer here, design everything from robotics to trick mechano-optical stuff for telescopes.

This thread is ace so far! Def want to persue happiness, not cash. Keep em coming!!

Long haul Economy class seat tester …

Are there height restrictions on driving a white van, then?

Kurt, my uncle spent most of his career in the RAF (in ATC) but when he hit Civvy St he ended up working as a manager for a private contractor who worked mainly for the RAF servicing aircraft. Happy to put you in touch if you wish. My cousin is also in the AAC flying and training people to fly AH64s.

I make felt tip pens and also test economy longhaul airplane seats.

Ex77

I am a heating engineer (you do not want to do this). When I grow up I want to be a racing driver, or a lottery winner… I can’t really make my mind up.
Really anything that involves fast cars and girls.

Boothy

(hope the wife does not read exiges or I’ll probably not get any tea for a week or so)

Well, the first pursuit rules out construction. On the other hand the second bit puts it right back in there.

Best avoided IMHO

Apprentice Breakdancer…
Well im good at breaking things, especially if they are on a lotus!!

Also thinking of leaving the RAF too

Am a lab technician on a chemical plant. Not the most joy filled job but it keeps the exige on the road.

Rick

I’m an amateur gynaecologist

I can wallpaper your hall through the letterbox !!!

Seriously - I’m an IT consultant working in the catering sector
