What's the current tyre of choice?

After a long time in hibernation I’m getting my S2 back on the road but want to replace all the tyres before I use it. The car will only be used in the dry and hopefully a couple of track as well as trying a sprint or two. My only experience is 048’s, what are the current recommendations?

Lots of choice these days.

I run the AD08R and am quite happy with them for road and track.

I could be tempted by the r888r next or the Avon ZZR.

Thanks Andy, just had a search through SELOC too and the r888r appears popular. Any preferred suppliers?

I really liked the ad08r tyres but sadly these are no longer available.
The replacement is ad08rs but heard compound is not good for track work & more of a road tyre now.

Went with Yokohama a052 full set cost me £725 pm me for details as not sure if allowed to post links.
These are available in the correct front size too 195/50/16 for S2 & are oem fitment for Elise cup 250.

Early days yet & not tried them on track but on road they are really good & surprisingly for a motorsport tyre wet grip is good too.

You are more thank welcome to post links. As long as it’s good for the community it’s good for exiges.com

Personally I would avoid ao48 or r888 if you are going to use it on the road. I got caught in a downpour with 888s on the M1 and it was a nightmare. It does not matter how good a driver you are, when you aquaplane you are a passenger, there is a reason they have become illegal. Avon zzs are wonderful in the wet on my Caterham. I would give them a big vote.

The R is slightly different though abs EU road legal?

I used A048’s, which I replaced with 888’s, SG front and GGG rear.

I’m running Advan AO52 on my S1, been very impressed to date…

Thanks everyone, I’ll take a look at the a052, they can’t be bad if they’re on Cup Elise’s from the factory. I’m no driving god so I’m sure they’ll exceed my expectations.

I’ve found them very good in the dry/warm which you’d totally expect. But what’s impressed me most is handling in cold or damp early morning conditions where they offered great road holding still.

Any good on track?

I think it’s pretty difficult to pick what will be a good tyre, obviously what Lotus fit is a good reference. As I was saying before, for road use I look at the tread. The only purpose of the tread is to eject water from under blocks touching the tarmac and get it out the side. I’m planning on either Avon zzs or ad08rs for my Exige in the spring as they look like the will good at clearing water. V105 is s as another option, lotus fit them on the 220 sport.

Thanks mate, all valid points, I’m in now rush so will do the research on all the tyres mentioned in all the comments. The car will be used predominately on nice dry days and hopefully a couple of trackdays.

I cannot recommend the V105 for the track if you use them lots. hey have a lot of tread movement and squirm a lot. Great for fast road and the odd trackday mind

Thanks for clarifying this Andy

I got them from oponeo, delivered to tyre fitters of choice took about a week.

Not had a chance to try them on track yet unfortunately.
I had Oulton park booked for later this month, but had to cancel :frowning:
