i understand that the 1.8 engine in the exige will be no more after this year but:
1)why exactly is this because i thought the engine was seen as being green and relatively good for environment? (ie low mpg and cheap road tax)
2)does this mean the exige model will also end altogether? or will there be a different engine used? (i do understand there has been talk of the evora 3.5 being used). is there any official response from lotus on this?
and finally, what will the discontinuation of the exige altogether OR the use of a different engine have on the resale price of the 1.8 exiges? will they go up, down?
basically im worried about buying a new or nearly new exige only for the price of resale to plummet suddenly due to this.
It’s not really green. My N/A Yota was nearly the same as my BMW330ci.
The package as a whole was maybe acceptable but that was because the car is light. The Yota will not pass Euro 5 emissions.
They will sell what ever stocks are available but not in EU.
Lotus haven’t got the numbers to debvelope their own engine so need to buy from a maker. Not many car people are making this kind of ultraperformance small cheap unit that would be suitable and pass all the tests. Only Bike engines.
VAG would have been a good choice with plenty versions aviailable with turbo models easily tuneable.
To take th brand forward they need innovation. An engine that us stageringly poeerfull, light, cheap and unique in some way.
The Honda red tops where this engines for last 10 years. We need a neew one
spoke to dealer thats normaly good for info last week , he said yes its because of emissions and he thinks the V6 will be shown at the Paris show with the new Esprit.
He thinks late 2011 or early 2012 for the Exige V6 in showrooms and 2013 for the Esprit and the supercharged auto Evora next year.
I dont think it will affect the value of the S2 cars , they dont make rover K S1s and look at them and also im not convinced a heavy low reving V6 will suit the car , i dont like it in the Evora.
He also said that the new top blokes at lotus dont like the Elise or Exige and even the Evora and think they will be phased out over time to make way for high end 100k and over cars.
i also think thats the wrong way to go .

I can’t see Lotus selling upto 8000 cars per year without them. And what about spreading the emmissions rating?
spoke to a salesman at lipscombe he reckons that they will still use a toyota lump inside just dont know what lump, but he is sure they will not get rid of the elise or exige
So if the V6 Exige turns out to be something more than just a test bed for the Evora and actually goes into production, would you buy one (funds permitting of course) or will that lump in the back upset the whole balance of the car (as it did when they stuck the Astra iron lump in the back of VXs).
I would fancy the VAG 1.4TSi in the back of an exige, looks like it will easily make upwards of 200bhp, anyone know the weight difference with the 7 speed dsg box?
JBS auto designs in East mids had an octavia with around 550 bhp a few of years go when i took my golf GT/TDI to them to be mapped … I was well impressed …untill they said after 200 the chassis is useless …
Just goes to show though… some modern engines are strong …
some even think 300 is the limit for our 1.8 Yota !!
More like 600 ??? Even an 80’s Cossie was good for 550 !! ffs
Tongue in cheek comment Uncle P … I know .Instruction … Instruction …
Whatever we will hear from Lotus about the new engine for the Elise
Fore sure it will be the wrong engine-decision
my anticipation: the engine will be heavy, weak, non-reliable but really cheap.
Some of the last opinions of Lotus management (not the R&D stuff) regarding LCE proved me, that the new management knows nothing about cars - especially racecars ((
