Hi everyone, what is the appropriate topspeed that you would drive a standard S1 Exige?
(for more than just a few seconds… )
Just wondering as I’m on germen fastlane from time to time… Here in Switzerland, speed is limited to 75mph )
thanks

156mph with the wind behind you. Just takes a while once you get into fifth gear and after 150mph the speedo runs out so I tend to just look at the rev counter until it gets to 8000rpmish.
156 ? Surely not …
Seems very unlikely for a standard car. I would say you’d be lucky to reach 140.
i have done many flat out stretches and my 190 S1 takes quite a while to get to an indicated 135, then with a little help from a downhill slope on an autobahn “hill” I have had it on the clock at 144. And this is certainly not a real 144 mph.
these cars struggle over 120 mph mostly due to the airbrake bolted on the back.
my other family car is noticably quicker than my exige after 100mph (bmw 2.5)… this is the main reason for me wanting alot more power in the back of the little blue beast. The most I have seen is around 135mph.
If it was droped from a plane it wouldnt reach 156 mph. Lotus dont claim more than that from a 240 Exige(watch out for the 275 version, oops my lips are sealed)

Well un-seal them then…

I would think that an 190bhp Exige could top 140mph.
My Elise has reached 140 in 4th (8000rpm, standard gearbox), same reading on both on the Stack and a Snooper. It is running 200bhp though.
When I changed to 5th it was still accelerating, but I ran out of road.
Use yer sat nav for speed readings as speedos are pantaloons, 10% plus or minus.
The Elise / Exige one is VERY accurate, but it does depend on how worn the tyres are. My readings were within 1mph on the Stack and the Snooper.
I’ve got 140 out of the car. Only thing stopping it was the rev limiter, however I can’t see it getting more than 150 without some serious extra power.
Just popping out for a quick blast down the A14, be back in an hour.
140mph out of a UCR box, mines a CR so you’ll have a lower top end but get there quicker. More power will just get you there quicker, not increase your top speed.

Ding!

Sorry didn’t explain myself well. I meant that if my car can get 140 with an UCR box at max revs then a normal CR box is unlikely to see more than 150 without enough power to take it to terminal revs in 5th.

By law a speedometer must not indicate a speed less than the true speed. Consequently all manufacturers set the speedometer to exagerate the true speed and they can do this up to 10%.This is to allow for tyre wear which can effect the true reading by 2%. So its reasonable that with fresh tyres a car will have at least 2% exageration. I wonder how far Lotus push the upper limit. If you look at the contemporary road tests when the S1 was launched the main critisism was the lack of pace with some reporting little or no improvement over the standard Elise. The acceleration tables show the degree of over reading to be nearer the 10% limit. To check using a sat nav would require a profesional quality unit and that the americans switch off the selective random variation.
If you are refering to cruising speed I use a speed between half and two thirds max permitted revs.

Most road tests reached the max speed in 4th running up to the rev limiter.5th only dropped the revs.

yes, my question actually was ‘what is the top speed’ and ‘what is the top speed you would drive for a longer distance’.
As in Germany, at night, it often is possible to drive top speed for more than 15 minutes or so
In Switzerland, 1st and 2nd gear would be enough as the speed limit is 75mph
thanks for all the answers
