Before I decided on an Exige I test drove a standard S 220. The whine from the supercharger was so very evident.
So I purchased on 07 Exige S 220 with Stage 2 & TRD.
Have since removed the TRD as I didn’t like the noise.
I just don’t get a supercharger whine noise, its only just noticeable under hard throttle above 6,000rpm.
The Stage 2 is loud, would this be cancelling out the SC whine, or do I have a car without an SC noise?
I would contemplate changing to a slightly quieter exhaust if it gave back an SC whine.
I thought it was the TRD that gave the supercharger the whine, it did on my 260
Are you getting full boost from the supercharger ?
I did have a problem with the actuator valve not opening fully on the supercharger, it looks like a dump valve.
I always thought the compressed air through the charger itself made the distinctive sound.
Different superchargers create a different noise. My g ladder I had on my golf rallye made a really strange sound, saying that it makes nothing compared to a lysholm unit.
I know of a few that have had a problem, the engine just seems short of power. The actuator is a very simple design with an arm that pushes a rubber piston causing a vacuum which then opens the valve. If this doesn’t open fully it can restrict the supercharger boost.
As soon as I changed mine the supercharger whined allot more and I had a real increase in power. My car had a fault from new that I didn’t even realise.
The part cost about £70 and I fitted it myself.
You should be able to see the actuator arm move, but it might not be moving fully. If you think your car has plenty of power it’s probably working fine.
But as I said my supercharger made more noise once the valve was changed.
My original set up was great for a dominant SC shriek - that was TRD & a 2bular system. I’m currently running a tired Stage 2 sports zorst it just drowns out the SC shriek.
I reckon I’ll go back to a 2bular when my current one gives up - which might be soon given the racket it makes!
