I have been working on the car on Sunday after the F1 doing the geo and managed to get it finished last night, thought i would give it a quick spin to see if everything was ok but it would not start.
It was running fine on Saturday and the only thing i have touched on the car other than geo related nuts and bolts was i attached my trickle charger as the radio had been on for a few hours.
What happens is i turn the ignition on and all the usual things happen, dash lights on fuel pump primes, i press the immobiliser off and turn it over which it does fine (Battery now fully charged)it tries to fire up but then just cuts out and the more i have done this the longer it takes to fire.
I have cheaked all the fuses and pushed and pulled all the electrical connectors in the engine bay, i did searches on here and Seloc for known problems and fixes.
The only thread i found with similar symptoms was a guy from Switzerland whos car would not start at Hockenhiem and it was just loose connections to his ECU.
Sounds like the inertia switch to me, i’ve had a similar problem. I was driving on the track and ran onto the runmble strips and the car cut out. Naturally I tried to start it but I had the same symptons as you’ve described. The switch is on the ns down below the air box, shows you in your manual. At least worth trying.
Well I was thinking it had was now on the right hand side of the tank rather than the left where the pump is…
But how the post read was rubbish and I rarely use spanners anymore as my “tame” mechanic doesn’t let me
Got myself an OBD reader and had a quick play, it showed 2 codes one of which was for the MAF and i think the other was for the TP sensor but i deleted them by mistake (i dont know what i am doing with the reader yet).
So i have checked both and as far as i can tell they both work, it’s starting to look like the ECU is f***ed but how can this be possible i am 100% sure i have not put the charger on the wrong way round.
Any suggestions of who would be the best to speak to
Checking around for you Mike, try… this or this or this even sounds good. Join do a search you never know?
Me, I do work myself and if (when ) I f**k it up…I call JSR, they’ll even come pick it up! That’s my peace of mind anyhoo…and it’s not meant to be a sales pitch but I know my cars in good honest hands…even tho they’re raving QUEENS Alright not Wayne
My ECU died recently. Started with the alarm/ immobilser light coming on when driving. Took it to sportomotive who took the ECU out to double check no water had got in it, when they put it back in the car failed to start. Luckily i had a warranty which picked up the majority of the bill. think it was about 650 for the new ECU (roughly).
However, when they hooked it up they could not get anything out of the ECU in the form of fault codes, it simply would not do anything- so not sure if your ECU is fucked if you have it talking to the OBD reader.
Not much help i know, good luck trying to get it sorted

Thanks for those Jonny, they have given me some ideas but i’m not confident, one thing i’m going to try tomorrow is a new battery as reading some threads it would seem that the electronics can be sensitive to iffy batteries.
Try it again … fresh in the morning for a few times… if it still don’t start then take out the plugs and compare the 4 of em …All 4 the same narrows the search …
One vastly different and there may lie your answer …
If they’re all dry it’s fuel related … if wet it’s spark/mixture/compression related … tell me you have’nt stuffed a rag up the filter to stop dirt/mice whatever !! that can stop engine running …
If any are considerably different , then look at the offending cylinder …
Engine only needs 3 conditions to run …
Correct (ish) Air/fuel mixture (rags spoil this)
Compression (without this it won’t run…simple…)
Spark!! at or nearly at the right time …
all 3 can be “crudely” checked at home …
Do yourself a favour though … have a fire extinguisher at hand if mixing petrol and sparks … it is nigh on impossible to ignite petrol vapour from plug holes by intention , but , sod’s law states that you may suceed …
Good luck , I know how frustrating it is to have a motor “not quite start” …
Tried a new battery with no difference so plugs out and they are all the same, very wet, put the plugs in the leads and all have very good sparks but while doing this lots of fuel came out of the spark plug holes.
So i have fuel, spark, and i believe compression (thumb over hole)but it still wont start.
Is there anybody local to me who has a spare ECU that i can try ?
