My ‘trusty’ old Volvo V70 is starting to cost me money to keep on the road… money meant to be in the Exige operating fund!
I want to replace it with something no more than 6k, probably a diesel as I am spending silly money every month on the 28mpg Volvo. New car must average over 50mpg!
Need something I can get my boys in, the dog in, will carry Lotus wheels and tyres and stuff to the tip! Not TOO bothered about ‘street cred’… I have that being an Exige owner!
Especially if you don’t care about street cred, thats what keeps the price down and makes it a bargain for those who can see beyond the badge to a cracking car.
Head turner ??? WTF ??? - stomach churner more like !!!
Definately will get 50MPG - that’s milliseconds per gallon
Gets better - just saw ‘has more toys than Ann Summers including gadgets like rear reclining massaging seats, front and rear climate control with electric moving vents’
happy hunting pete, looks like the badge police have had a word with you though,
VW, audi or merc??
my missus runs a new skoda octavia (the new 1.6 td engine so prob out of current price range, but the 1.9 tdi in the older model does almost as many miles - averaging 64 mpg at the mo) and i run a 1.4 oil burner mazda 2, which is even better than that for my daily commute. we both do 20. 25k a year and also use the octavia for holidays, camping, shopping, horse riding kit lugging ,etc etc.
like you say its all about doing a job, you have the exige for the fun drives (having said that i’d but either of mine against there more recogonised brothers / sisters driving pleasure wise once you get past the badge thing) i reckon you could get a much better spec, newer, less miles car for your cash if you went
skoda octavia, seat exeo, mazda 4 or 6, toyota avensis.
Steer clear of the A2’s too many scare stories of high repair costs when they get on a bit, other than that anything by VAG should be a good choice excellent engines etc. you want cheap motoring a Mondeo TDCi is a good choice and they must last well, most cabs near me are Mondeos and you know what cabbies are like for unning cost
I am not a badge man… (I mean that fact that I now have an S2 over an S1 tells it all eh!!! )
Ozzies are not interested in such nonsense!.. neither does a ‘late plate’ do it for me! I used to drive about in a ‘J’ plate Volvo 740 until it threw a rad hose and then had HGF!!! My current car has done 130K which should be nothing for a V70!
No my motivation is a cheap runner, Lisa and I do about 50K miles per year so that adds up to a sh.t load of fuel!!! But as a result we also need reliability! I find the ‘plastic’ interiors of the Jap cars hard to live with… the Europeans are miles ahead in this department.
VAG stuff seems ‘overpriced’. Would like another 118d series Bimmer but way over budget!
Anyway, had the new Lambda sensor fitted in the Volvo and it’s running again now! So as I am away quite a bit over the next 3 months I will now put this exercise off till the spring!
Sis- in -law ran a Scoda as a reps car did millions of miles per year …no probs whatsoever. …You could always fix some LOTUS badges to it to fool every one. as per LDC members article.
Had a Golf Gt Tdi for 5 years … was unreliable with many electrical faults and engine reliability issues too…
Now running a Toyota diesel and is proving 100 percent reliable.
I know they wont do 50 to the gallon, but you only live once. What does your 747 do to the gallon? Can easily get 35, even driving like a nutter!
In all seriousness, Sean and I have 1 each, both more than 100k, both not missed a beat, bar some coils, which are fine since the latest batch from VW/Audi, and some tyres and pads.
U can even fit a dog in the back. Provided its not becoming a horse like Seans!!!
