Wet track day tyres?

After last year, when it was wet/damp all year, I think I should get a spare set of wheels and wets.

Some say, r888s are much better in the wet than 48s in the wet, or is it better to get some normal road tyres.

If it is monsoon conditions I stay in the garage.

I did a wet day at Snetterton a Sunday or two ago. I had a set of Michelin Pilot Sport 3s on, they were fantastic. And even when it dried out later in the afternoon they still were fantastic. I was so impressed I think I may get rid of my spare set of wheels and A048 and just run the PS3s on and off track

Really? I prefer to leave my car in the pitlane with the window open

Got scrubbed in R1R’s on my spare set of wheels for those liquid sunshine trackdays

I just go out on the AO48s and enjoy. Nice to get the car moving around under you at slightly more sensible speeds.

I had a very wet day out at Brands Hatch in October last year, the only dry lap was the sighting lap behind the course car. Just a few minutes later as we went out for the first session it started raining and at times we saw a proper deluge.
I was there with a friend in his exige, and another in a VX220, both on 888s. I had looked at the forecast the night before, whimped out and swapped the 888s for R1Rs for the day.

Contrary to expectation, there were only a few moments during the day that the R1Rs were noticeably better than the 888s. At times when it was deep enough running across the track for us to be aquaplaning, we all were, and as soon as the surface was dry enough to get some heat into them, then the 888s were the better tyre. The marginal period where the R1Rs had more grip was when it was properly wet but not actually running across the track. Brands doesn’t have a whole lot of flat expanse of tarmac, so plenty of opportunity for the water to run off - it’s certainly no airfield, however the period where the road tyre was better was certainly limited.

I’m off to Snetterton on Monday on the 888s, hoping for a dry day, but largely unphased if it does rain some.

Both the above. Passed everything all day at Silverstone and everything at Donnington a couple of times last year in monsoon conditions on 888’s, including standing water. I find getting creative with the lines, going the long way round can be highly advantageous.

if you are going o run another set of wheels just for wet use then you may as well buy proper wet race rubber which will run rings around anything else including road tyres, if you want cheap wet tyres then Toyo T1R are very good with a similar tread design to Dunlop Wet Race spec

We have Avon wets on shelf as that’s the control wet for LCUK this year, think they are about £700 a set

I drive to the track so cannot use track tyres, as I m no driving god the ao48s worry me in the wet. Good advice on the Tr1s. I know many people hate them but I used them on my Elise and found them fine. Not as grippy as Neovas or Ao48 but the slipped nicely at speeds where I felt confident.

Of course , not having the power to spin the rears ,even in monsoon, helps too !
Car must be so stable lol …
 peace my boy x

You found the red wine then lol

I did buddy …
And fook do I need it.
Best part of 4 grand for a gearbox ? And that’s without labour.
