weight saving

Quick one, im thinking of removing the side impact bars from the doors on my s2 exige to save weight (track car). Has anyone done this?

Wouldn’t it be safer to take some Senakot the night before for a similar weight saving?

I’ve been in two shunts in my life, both on track, and the idea of doing anything to compromise safety in a track car is madness.

How much do for bars weigh? Not much I dare say.

There are plenty of ways of getting the weight down in an S2 if you want to use it as a track car, I have removed ~100kg from mine and jonnyfox removed even more, however, removing the door bars is not something I think any of us would do. Remove the radio and speakers that way you just get bored not dead

I could do with losing 15kg from my chassis!

you and me both, just seems easier to buy carbon fibre than go on a diet :open_mouth:

 fair point. Can it be done though if I really wanted to??

Yes it can be. I wouldn’t though as it makes the door really weak. I have seen it done, but with nothing in the door except for the lock, exterior release button and a Perspex fixed window.

I have also seen someone forget they have done it and lean on the door quite heavily getting out in a hurry. At which point the door fell off the mount at the front and onto the floor.

The nicer way is to machine the beam down to remove a chunk of weight from it still leaving the outside and any mounts, but you still need to be careful making it too weak. You can also machine most of the hinge part out except for top, bottom and a brace between them.

But there are lots of places I would be looking before doing this, as its only ally.

Thanks for the reply!

Last place I would look for weight saving …doubt if you have been in or even seen an on track accident…
I would be looking fo MORE protection , not less…so Don’t Do It. :astonished:

If you want more speed. Try driver training with a really good instructor first And if you divulge your weight we will advise if you need to diet!!!
But whatever you do HAVE FUN in your Exige

assume you’ve done the easy bits?

aftermarket seats net you 10+ KG
remove the rear window
ditch stereo
ditch air-con
small battery can save 5+KG

Then there is the unsprung mass, wheels obvious, but also consider aftermarket uprights (geo benefits too) and also what discs does it run?

oh and alloy tank

Done so far…

Te37 wheels
Stripped bits of boot and trim lining
6.5kg race battery
airbags removed
carbon interior trim, slowly getting there!
carbon exterior trim, as above
no a/c

Lots more to do but I want to try and keep it a bit comfy

cool, what’s the scales say?
