Weight S1vs S2

Having had my car weighed at JCRacing in Dudley it came in at 889kg. I’ve fitted a 2ublar 421 Manifold & 8" GT3 exhaust/eliminator/CF diffuser saving approx 10kg. Odyssey battery saving 4.5kg, Volks TE37 all round saving 13kg, stereo/speakers out saving 5kg, seats saving 2kg total, seat belts 2.5kg and lots of plastic cab, engine bay and rear wing say maybe 2kg. Added 4L plumb in extinguisher 4kg (is 5kg but took out hand held at 1kg), big brake kit, 2 way Ohlins and harness bar…?kg Wondering how much air con weighs but to and from tracks when not being towed…not sure I want that gone as Apple don’t do an ipod that blows cool air…yet!

So I’m thinking…

Where is the big difference between both cars S1 vs S2?

What does (basic form) an Exige S1, Exige S2 n/a, and a Exige SC 220 weigh?

And where else for me?

And where else for me?

Take the roof off!

Lol very true but come on clever clogs On a side note I’ve just found all the instruction for pedal adjustment ref heel and toe… All good stuff, next project starts tomorrow!

Well, share your finding with the wider audience

Lose the wedding ring jonny … then you gain 0.0001 per lap and get a chance with Jakki Degg … lol

Was that with a full tank. If so not bad for an S2.

Charcoal canister delete is 2kg saving for no real drawbacks.

Disclaimer: I haven’t done it myself though (CBA).

Get a bloody good remote controller and lose the driver

Or get an S1

My S1 as weighed on the corner scales is 764kg ready to go, brim=full of petrol so about 735-740 with an empty tank I guess.

Pretty much stock Exige S1, sports seats, no aircon, early(ish) build (126/601). Will be a bit lighter once rebuilt by a couple of kg.

Bloody hell I try and post a serious thread… you guys

Three quarters full Will. What else have you saved on? I know Ade saved weight on his fuel tank (I’ll search at some point today). That’s a big difference though hey well over 100kg’s between the two cars S1 & S2…where’s the weight been added? The air-con must save loads having read the big black book cover to cover yesterday but looks to be major work I think . Then there’s LSD & Accusump to take into account which could be offset some by a lighter fly wheel …clutch for clutch hopefully?

Hey Shaggy Pedals are different on my car because its a cable throttle. I can reset height by removing the bung on the back of the pedal and replacing it with a smaller bolt. Then its just a matter of resetting the cable length on the block…as per instruction. I think also I can slide the mount on the brake pedal (& clutch) towards or away from the accelerator.

Weight differences; ABS gubbins/clams/sound proofing/engine & box (I think, but not sure), curling tongs etc

curling tongs etc

You crack me up

I dont want to put mine on the scales ignorance is bliss as they say

Sod the S1 Vs S2 debate*.

All Lotus are traditionally lightweight compared to the competition**. Alternatively they are all lardy compared to Caterhams & Atoms etc.

You pays yer money…

  • S2’s are faster as everyone knows

** The Evora may be an exception

The devils in the detail jonny. To make your car light you would end up turning it into a horrible road car.

John (JSRacing) built an S2 elise race car that weighed under 700Kg’s. It did have a K series engine in it, but the weight can be lost from a Toyota car too.

As has been said, the ABS, the AC, the heater, the wiring loom stripped of everything you don’t need. doors can be lightened, swap glass for lexan. You can even go as far as sand blasting all of the galvanising off the rear sub frame as that saves a couple of Kg’s. Swap the two front oil coolers for a rear mounted laminova etc etc etc

Its basically doing lots and lots and lots of little things that all end up in a big weight saving.

That’s George’s old car right? I saw that it was up for sale again.

Don’t get me wrong I don’t want to rip everything out of the car, like I don’t want the worlds most aggressive geo. 80% of the time it’s track use, little bit on road maybe to and from so I am looking to do more than the average…saying that I’m not full on on track as I’d like to nor will I so long as the climate stays the way it is.

I saw the windows and doors on the Plans car at Autosport, what do you thing that would save and cost for that matter?

I managed to get my n/a S2 exige down to approx 850kg but thats with a full cage. I could have probably got it down to about 820kg but would mean some serious mods and cutting away of things you probably dont really want to be removing (internal door strengthening bars etc).

850kgs with a full cage is pretty darn good for an S2.

My a/c S1 was 780kgs, lighter now.

Ian

So is my maths correct;

S1 780kg ish
S2 S 935kg

= 155kg = over 24stone = 2 fairly light passengers!!
