The FIA spec stuff is basically like dense polystyrene… great in a big impact but I got a nicely bruised arm when I kept knocking into it on a rally stage…

The three other alternatives I have used in the past are
a) the plumbers lagging type, nice, chunky and soft for minor day to day impacts, gets scagged easily and is think, comes in lots of colours though.
b) thin foam rubber type stuff, similar to a) but only comes in dark grey and is a lot thinner.
c) Safety Devices used to do some nice padding which was basically like b) but covered in a vinyl outer and was held together down the seam with velcro. I used this for years on a door bar as it could rotate around the bar when you got in and out the car so didn’t get messed up.

Both a, b and c wouldn’t offer anywhere near as much protection as the FIA in a big impact though.

I got tubes of padding for the support bar which runs from my roll bar into the passenger footwell. The actual bar is about 2.5 inches diameter from memory.
