anyone selling one? Or know of a bargain, id like one like seanb but they seem silly money someone must make one cheaper or someone might have a second hand one? This may be a silly question but do roll cages have a shelf life like harnesses?
Chris i think you will struggle to find a “cheap” s1 rollcage, the original safety devices full cages are like hens teeth to find new or secondhand.
Your only real options are either an a frame petty bar setup (around 300 secondhand) or one of randys replacement half cages which are around 650.
Personally i would go for the cage off randy as i really dont like the petty bar.
You could always get someone such as plans or Elgan of hotlap.com to build you a bespoke full cage but these are likely to be 1500-2500
i nearly had one of randy’s but its 650 + vat which i think is expensive for what it is. im going to see if custom cages will do me one but with the front legs going through the dash like the safety devices one as i dont like the idea of puttings holes in the sill where you have to with there elise cage. i cant understand why there so expensive for the lotus’s as theres not much to them when you compare them to other cages. ill have to buy something, just thought id ask as i might fall lucky and find someone who wants to sell.
Has no-one else noticed the cage in Sinclaires Camel coloured car?
Had a Safety devices Sticker across the roll hoop, but the front section bolted to that roll hoop and was a through the dash type. Had solid re-inforcing gussets between the tubes across top of screen and top of doors (as opposed to the diagonal tubes like on mine and Seans)
Regardless of whose made it I seriously doubt there’d be change from 1000 as the Roll hoop would have to be either modified to suit or really should be completely replaced with something with far better rear stays - Like Randy’s.
The Sinclaires cage is about 1200 quid I think - the only thing I didn’t like about it was the fact it had no rear stays.
The original one like Sean seemed like the best option to me, but no longer made.
There is an old adage that goes along the lines of:
“If you cant afford a roll cage you can’t afford to go racing”
Plans have the FIA cages as fitted to the Autobytel cars, in stock, ready to go. They are the best cage for an S1 bar none. We only fit them, and do not supply mail order. They come with FIA stickers and homologation papers.
theres a difference between being able to afford it and getting a good deal. When you look at other cars cages there’s alot more to them and half the price of the lotus ones. i wanted the one sean has but might end up with randy’s cage. I just want a nice looking cage that doesn’t bolt into the sill in front of the dash.

Would agree with that… it’s certainly not cheap!
A pic of the Siclairs cage, looked very good to me.

What a hideous steering wheel, though!
Good work Mad! Forgot to get a picture of it myself.
Chris if you want the best cage but don’t like the prices they’re available at there is still an option…It involves a mig welder and about 15 metres of CDS tubing! As long as it’s the correct spec materials and in an accepted layout according to the MSA blue book a home made cage is acceptable. You only ever need FIA approved cages for FIA events.
Like Graham mentioned though, the Safety Devices one is probably the best available (though it does limit how far back the seat can go-for those of us of a more manly stature) and if I was going to bother to make my own I’d be wanting to improve on it simply to justify the effort.
Either way you choose, you can’t go racing with the standard hoop as the rear stays don’t meet blue book regs so, while no one really likes it, it could be worth getting your hands on a cheap petty bar until you find something better…
Do a DIY its all good fun

Apologies for hijacking, does anybody know how much the sinclaires cage is? my car is going in there soon and id definately be interested… have emailed sinclaires also but i think their v busy at the minute
yeah its 1400 mate which is a rip off. Ive been taling to a few companys and they will do bespoke cages for slightly less.
Hi Guys,
harry hockley motorsport are currently making a cage for the S1 priced around 695. Its not finished yet but I am waiting for photos.
Also if you look up under ebay “escort” under classic cars there is a company who will supply and fit a cage for approx 850 depending on spec.
Safty devices are supplying a cage again now through a distributo (email and they will send the details (cant remember the name of the co.)
Caged in Wiltshire still do the front bars but you have to cut the sill.
Roll centre will fabricate one from any where from 600 upwards.
Custom cages also do one try them.
Basicaly I have been contacting all of the big cage manufactures and also some small ones, I have contacted firms that will do one offs and they are big money.
There is no real difference in what we need for an Elsie its basicaly the fact the manufactures can fabricate and sell more run of the mill cars and once a jig has been made its just a case of bending the tube on a manderell bending machine.
I need to buy a full cage soon and am looking at the Safty devices cage / Harry Hockley. If there are any more guys perhaps we can get a discount PM me if you wouild like me to try.
best wishes, Glen
thats more like it. i like discount and group buys.
Hi, I am after a full cage also, do like the Safety Devices one like the sinclair car had. Count me in for bulk purchase. If enough people got together surely it might be possible to go direct to Safety Devices.
i got one of randys cages today quite pleased with it and it is a bit lighter than the original one aswell.

Have you weighed Randy’s cage? I’d be interested to know how much it weighs as I forgot to weigh mine.
