VVC HGF, which parts to use for repair?

My Rover Coupe VVC suffered HGF today which is right annoying. I’m having to keep my fingers crossed on the condition of the head as I don’t have a big budget, but I plan on doing the best I can to prevent the same thing happening again.

I am planning on using the uprated oil ladder, and it seems a PRT 'stat will be a good idea too.

I am however hearing mixed messages about using the MLS gasket. Some sources say it’s great and works with any K, some say it’s not suitable for the VVC. Is the uprated oil rail combined with the elastometric gasket a better solution?

Also where can I get my head hardness tested if it doess appear to be in good nick? If it really is knackered then I guess I’ll have no option but to change it.
