VHPD running on 3

Hi All,

I hope that you good peeps can help me. Ran the Exige a few weeks ago, everything was fine, with the engine in very rude health. Went to fire it up a couple of weekends ago, and it will only run on three cylinders.

It is a standard VHPD, and it is the same cylinder that refuses to fire (nearest the distributor, no1?). Plugs and leads swapped over make no difference, but removing the spark plug and earthing it on the head does produce a spark. In desperation bought Magnecor leads and a new injector, but the same cylinder refuses to fire. This is not a mechanical issue as I have compression, and everything was in top form previously.

The battery has been swapped on the car, between the car running well and attempting to use it again a few weeks ago, could this be the cause in some way? The immobiliser failed six months ago, and has basically been taken out of the ignition circuit, so should have no effect.

The only lead that I have is that the throttle position sensor may not be set properly, which can apparently manifest itself with the ECU detecting an emmissions issue and potentially cuts one of the cylinders. I’ll try the reset procedure in the next few days (turn car on, throttle full on then full off five times, turn off car for one minute) to see if this cures it.

However, should this fail to cure it, does anyone have ideas? Has anyone had a similar problem?

Thanks all,

Clive.

Hi Clive
Have a look at the pins on the coil (the ones that the plug leads connect to), I’ve had a misfire a couple of times and each time one of those pins was corroded on cylinder 4 - same as yours (No1 is the cambelt end).

Clive

Could be a stuck injector?

Start engine up and tap the errant cylinder fuel injector with a screwdriver - tap tap tap in time to ‘smoke across the water’ - seriously

Cheers

Simon

You are King K’s errant unkle, & I claim my 10 yen

will you settle for 9 Mr P?

Okay mate, but don,t even think about offl oading your Bitcoins on me!

Is that a euphemism

All right, all right - calm down lads. I pop away for a bit, and find my post is starting to go down the Exiges.com descent with usual suspect Pesky chipping in. It’ll be bodily functions next ;D.

Anyway - success!!!

Azrael - All of the pins were okay, some of them did appear to be dirty when inspected earlier, but the pin for no.4 (thanks for correcting me) looked fine. After another recommendation, even though I did have a spark, I bought a new coil. Needed help from previous posts on here, as this is a Vauxhall part that Elise Spares / Parts / Shop do not stock. Fitted it at the weekend, and hurrah, I have four cylinders back .

Simon - I’d already changed the injector, however I’m looking forward to one of them getting stuck to do the ‘smoke on the water’ thing - sounds fun .

Cheers all. Let the buffoonery continue
