I’ll be getting my vhpd head back next week from Dave Andrews, it’s a spare for my s1. I have the matching vhpd bottom half for the spare head. A good mate wants to build a 1.8 for his Caterham race car. Would I be a mug to sell it to him (mates rates)? I wants the forged pistons, rods and upgraded crank. I’d still have the head, Gavin my mechanic tells me the bottom ends don’t go in Exige s1s so I don’t need a spare.
Options.
1.Sell bottom end to mate.
2. Get Dave to do the bottom end and have a full DVA vhpd as a spare which must also be worth something (5k).
I think most is the value is in the head, no idea of the value of the bottom half!
If I were you I’d keep it and have the rebuild done. Why?
-
Worst case scenario - you’ve sold it, your engine expires but your mate’s already blown his in his Caterham
-
Given the rarity of VHPD engines and the increasing desirability of ‘original’ S1’s, there’s always going to be a market for a known, built, complete engine

Just because you can
I’m getting some prices from Dave Andrews.
His work is pretty handy!

A fully rebuilt vhpd has been available for over a year on Seloc for £3500. It is in Athens which is not ideal. Fits my view that they are rare but no real demand. If one blows new parts exist for everything except the head.
This one?
According to my reading of the advert it was listed only last month?
Obviously it’s your call but my view is I’d rather have a complete engine available as demand is only going to increase, especially as the US market for S1’s has now opened up.
Keep it, or sell to me if my head doesn’t pass Dave’s test….
Seriously though, unless you need the money I’d be keeping it for “just in case” / “piece of mind”. Same reason I have a spare perspex engine cover that I’ll hopefully never need!
I have engine, engine cover, full set of standard wheels . . . how much?
