I have been a member here since 2000 as I own an S1 Exige since then and now live abroad (S1 Exige here with me).
I am looking to perhaps buy a particular S2 Exige that has become available here (to keep the S1 company … but I wanted to see what the indicative price for that car would be in the UK and any comments you may have (as I do not know the S2 Exige 240).
(and I am posting the Vin here in case anyone can shed any light in any way as Lotus is no longer present here so no chance of doing any kind of look up)
It is also a long way away which requires a flight which I cant do under lockdown so if a bargain i could take a risk…
It is an Exige S240
It was registered in 2010 (but may have been built earlier?)
2 owners
VIN no: SCCWC11179HN80004
Light blue with two light grey stripes running front to back
Mileage is only 12000 Miles
New tyres, FSH, Looks Immaculate from the pics all keys and books etc.
They claim no track use or accidents
Your thoughts on pricing and desirability would be greatly appreciated? (and any info that might be derived from the vin?)
Here is some info on how to read the chassis number
The digit in that chassis number is a 9 making it a 2009 model year car, so pre-face lift
Regarding price, with you being in SA? The values here are meaningless to be honest. It genuinely is what you and the seller agree on being the right price as i assume Lotus will be VERY VERY low volume.
I would have suggested the price is at the top, but currently with the car market in the UK a bit funny due to Covid and as you are in SA it is more what you are prepared to pay for the right car. If you are buying from a distance, get an inspection done.
I’d like to know how they prove no track use?
In SA I would think working aircon is a must and the sports pack always adds value (ease of sale). With that mileage it would be top price in the U.K., mid 30s.
Thanks guys…
Really appreciate all the input. Very valuable
Have had a good mate who runs a custom car shop (they customise and fix ferrari’s and such like so ideal) to go and look and all looks great except for a crack split in the lower front spoiler, and also some spidering at the centre of rear clam where someone has obviously reversed it and gently kissed a wall or similar. Also, due to the sun here, the big stickers stripe things have faded a lot. Both easy to fix and zero signs of any accident damage or clams off. I am still umming and aarrrring.
As for UK prices being important… I am a Brit living in Africa., which essentially means we could be 24hours away from driving the cars into containers, setting fire to our houses and then back on the first flight to Blighty. Would prefer to look at the Lotus as a global asset (all be it a small one) instead of paying a silly premium for one down here (which we do so much with new cars)… and if I do bring it back then its worth at least similar. Impossible to judge ‘value for money’ prices here with such a small market hence me asking your guys take on it which is extremely important.
In this case, it looks like it might be cheaper here than what it would be worth in the UK which is now making me ummmm more than aaaar.
hah, yes for sure on the aircon, however my S1 Exige being Car No 27 has none… I sweat my nuts off but worth the pain
Brilliant input, thanks so so much … have been waiting with baited breath for some guidance from you,… and I presume it goes without saying that being an S1 Exige freak that I would love the S240?
Would there be import taxes if you return the car to the U.K.? Probably not if it was sold in the U.K. originally.
An s2 is not much like an s1. I still have my s1 and sold my s2 recently. The s2 is the better car by normal standards, faster, more comfortable, traction control, good abs etc. It’s not quite as responsive as the s1 but not far off. My only downside was the pedal position for heal and toe.
The s1 is very raw, noisy, smelly, rattly, you have to stand on the brakes (but it stops) and makes your ears ring. Pretty good really. The s2 is soft in comparison.
Slightly different take here - if Covid-19 has taught us anything, it’s that the value of something is not in ££’s but in how much pleasure it gives.
So, if you’re happy with the idea of owning this particular S2 and the price is acceptable (give or take a little negotiation, of course!) then your decision is made
Which is exactly why my S1 is going back on track in August with LoT and the Caterham is getting a rest. Quite right. Could be dead next year (Cheery me).
Ok so I bought it at a Uk equivalent price that you guys would cry! Only GBP 25k!!!
2010 (built 09) S240 with only 19,500kms
Mint except for Lower front Spoiler crack (we have ridiculous speed bumps here) and small rear clam paint damage (reversed into something lightly) being fixed (and stripes removed) and then will be coming home to Cape Town to join my S1 Exige (still being refreshed)
Can’t wait to drive the S2 on the track down here.
These cars are so rare in SA and are just so beautiful, I just had to steal it.
Thanks for everyone’s input, it was appreciated and helped a lot. If anyone ever ventures Cape Town I now have a spare Exige for you to drive
