So I’m off for a Walshy day tomorrow, and the Exige decides its not happy about its impending 3hour drive…
Firstly, 2k RPM on part throttle, especially when cold, its not happy. I know its not happiest here anyway, but its been especially bad the last two days, lurching around? Any suggestions?
Once warmed up, I was pootling along at in 5th on a light throttle and it died. Started back up OK, but its never done that before.
And I’m still not convinced about temperatures. I took the car to Paul Matty’s regarding coolant, told them my concerns about HGF but they can’t find anything wrong. However, the temps used to be a rock-solid 87-88 regardless, but now it varies between 83 and 89. I’m not totally convinced this is road speed or rev dependant?? Is there a delay between giving it some beans and the temperature dropping? I’m aware the temp will drop with the RPM increasing (water pump), but there seems to be a 5-10 second gap between the RPM increasing at the temp dropping?? Is that about right?
I seem to spend more time worrying about this car than enjoying it at the moment!
Dont worry about the temp gauge Matt!! It is not exactly a high tech piece of kit. If you were ever to get HGF, you would know about it… Besides, it really is not a big deal anyway as long as you dont cook the engine!
Have a look at the speed sensor on the RH rear wheel. They get grubby/damp contacts and often cause silly problems.
Part of the ‘charm’ of the S1 is just all this stuff. Enjoy the car and relaz with it mate. They will cost you money to upkeep… I reckon keep by about 1K a year as a fund.
S2’s are just nice and… well reliable! Touches lots of wood now!
Matt sounds that you may have an intermittent electrical fault - play about with the wires - esp those that feed the blue (temp display) and brown (ecu link) sensors on the lhd rear of the head.
Are you loosing any coolant btw?
Listening for sounds and imagining problems - welcome to Exigeworld
Speed sensor might be a good shout, it wont show anything less than 10mph, drops to the stopper. I’ve also been told to clean the IACV, which used to help on my old S160.
I do tend to keep it above 2.5k whenever possible - except when cold, which is my main issue. Pulling out of the street makes it look like I’ve got no clutch control And as I say, its never been this kangeroo-ey before (I’ve made that word up…)
Not loosing any coolant. Seems to have a mind of its own about where the correct level is, but PaulMattys have said its all OK.
Not wanting to add another variable to your diagnosis but mine has been slowly loosing the bottom end smoothness offered by the Emerald.
I took it over to Emerald last Tuesday and it was diagnosed as running lean and was back on the trailer after 30 minutes. JSR carried out a fuel pressure test and sure enough as the load / revs increased the pressure dropped off.
Now it has an uprated fuel pump fitted its gone the other way in that it is running a tad rich so its off to the rollers again.
May be worth excluding this potential and if you are looking for better drivability and still retaining some of the VHPD ‘charm’ look at an Emerald.
Car died on the motorway in the middle lane - same issue; engine dies when you come off the throttle, but its still showing revs on the dial, and oddly enough the rev needle still moves when you push the throttle! No drive though.
Pulled over, everything off and it restarted ok. Hopefully it won’t play up tomorrow, or on the trip home…
Car totally sh1t its biscuits on the Carlimits day after only an hour Wouldn’t start at all.
Got it down to the guys at PSR Automotive who after a bit of tweaking got it up and running - turns out one of the fuses had melted Can’t remember which it was called, the “inline” or “incoming” something or other…either way, its the first fuse in the top row behind the seat.
Seems it had a 25amp fuse in, they said it should only be a 10, so I need to get that looked at.
Either way, they got me up and running and back home again, so a HUGE thankyou to the guys at PSR for sorting it quickly
3hours on the Motorway in the Exige has left me a little tired, a little deaf, and a little sore though…
Sorry to hear that Matt, keep the faith most of us have been there at one time or another. When its all sorted and you have one of those drives/trackdays then you forgive the let downs.
I once snapped a driveshaft at North Weald whilst hooning…‘yes Mr AA man I was literally driving past this airfield and managed to snap a driveshaft honest’,…oh and the time I broke a bone in my wrist at North Weald…ahh memories.
