Tyre pressure monitor

Saw this on the gadget show last night. May be of use to some of the track warriors on here!!

I think Sean was getting these (or very similar) from Randy (Hofmanns), who has found them very useful this season in the LOT Series.

I got one from Randy and fitted it a few weeks ago. I’ve not been on track with it yet but it’s easy to use and quick comparision between the reported temps and an IR reading on tyre was within 1C.

For the 160 it cost it’s great, the temperature information is very interesting and i’m sure i’ll be using it a lot next year.

Is that the new price 160 ? Sounds good. On the Xmas list then.

I think that was a “bulk buy” price, as Randy arranged one some months ago.

If you have 2 sets of wheels, you’ll need to order another set of senders too - they replace the normal valves, so it’s a tyre off/on jobbie.

Yeah they retail at 179. I have sent email enquiring about ‘trade’ pricing. Will let you know how I get on.

Steve

It was at 10% off with Randy’s deal. If you need an additional set of sensors for a second set of wheel they were about 20 each.

The kit comes with wiring to use either the lighter or to hard wire, then the panel velcros where you want it.

The sensors are fixed to the back of special tyre valves, so the tyre needs to come of then wheel rebalancing afterwards.

Personally, I’d rather spend that sort of dosh actually doing a trackday - not too difficult to get pressures/temps right on a trackday, even for me. I ain’t worried about a couple of seconds here or there, as it makes no odds to me, not being a racing god & all that!

Clever “gadget” though

Oh Yea???

It is a very interesting test tool. Figuring how long it “actually” takes to get your tyres up to temp and knowing what the pressure actually is when they start to go off, i have had some very eye opening results amd this tool certainly contributed to my success at Silverstone.

where does it read the temp though? i thought you should aim to get the temp the same across each third of the tyre? How can that gadget do that? Does it not just give one temp per tyre?

Ding! I was sure that you were looking at a dash read out as you were 3 abreast with Randy & Walshy into & through Abbey for lap after lap!:stuck_out_tongue: You racing gods, eh!

PS Get yerself along to the NEC on Saturday - even Evosal & Nigel are making an appearance

But knowing the tyre temps is useful for us basic drivers too. It tells you how hard you’re pushing the car and i expect it’ll help (me) understand how i’m loading the car.

It’ll show when the tyres are up to temperature making it safer to speed up, if you’re working one front corner harder etc. I’m sure a good driver gets a lot of this from feel and experince, but for me a gauge showing the tyre temps are up is reassurring.

Chris, it just reads the temperature of the air inside the tyre, the sensor itself is mounted on the rim and there are couple of small holes to allow contact with the air. It won’t give you profile information, just an average for the tyre as a whole.

Checking tyre temps before and after a session or each time to you take the car out become just a quick glance too.

Maybe not for everyone, but it’s good info for geeks

Checking tyre temps before and after a session or each time to you take the car out become just a quick glance too.

So, what is the “ideal temp” on track? Do you also check that temp is even across the tyre?

Do you also visibly check the “triangle markers” on the tyres?

Oh, to be a geek, instead of an old fart!

Triangle marker what are they? Tell me more.

As for temperature, i’m not nearly precise or knowledgable enough to be aiming for a temp, it’s just to have some idea of how the temperatures change. Driving the other night they were down at about 9 C, there wasn’t much grip, today at about 20C there was more, a statment of the obvious maybe but it’s quantifying things in my mind. Also the right side seems to heat up faster than the left, maybe due to inconsistency between between the sensors, or maybe because i’m sat on the right? I’m hoping to just learn how temperature affects the grip especially come next year’s season. Do i need a couple of laps to warm up, or 100 yards, that kind of thing.

I do have a IR temperature probe to look accross the section as well, and i’ve used that a couple of times to help me know which way to adjust the tyre pressures, it’ll all learning for me. I’m hopeing the tyresure kit will help me understand the changes while actually drving too.

Hi Nick

You will hopefully be able to see one of the little triangles on the outer edge, in this pic. On track, you want the “graining” to be close to, but not beyond the triangle.

PS Can’t remember if the Yoko 48s have these markers?

This gadget is on my xmas pressie list.

thanks.

Red Motorsport in Germany are offering a same kind of gadget:

Sorry in German only, but pictures give you a hint.
