Tyre Pressure for 048's?

What are most people running with?

I’m running 24F/26R at cold temp, I think the S2 Exige manual recommends 29PSI all around?

Have a look at the archives but anywhere from 19/21 to the handbook figures have been quoted.

General concensus is that the Lotus figures are way too high.

hth

to give you an idea I have been running my rears at 23 cold and I am still getting uneven wear

I guess it depends how much heat you expect to get into the tyres… if you’re going to be driving around town mostly, then you’re going to want higher cold-pressures than if you’re doing a track day…

I’m usually around 22F/24R cold, or a bit lower, to get to ~29 hot for road use. Bear in mind, I’m in an area where 105F/40C is the norm this time of year and our night time “relief” hovers around 95F/35C.

On track, similar pressures are getting me in the 150F/65C (IIRC) area fairly evenly though I wouldn’t say I’m “up to speed” yet in the Lotus - still exploring her capabilities.

I’ve been told to expect to have to drop the cold pressures a good bit more once I’m running quicker.

Certainly a case where others’ experience comes in to play - the quoted Lotus pressures proved themselves too high for my use, resulting in a ~25% pressure gain when hot.

The handbook ‘cold’ pressures are i belive for a standard temp of 20degC In which case the hotter the ambient temp is, the lower the tyre pressure needs to be & vice versa.

Or am I talking bollocks

Not been on for a while but has this subject not been done to death?
Just do it!!

I actually did SEARCH before I posted. Why don’t you try searching for ‘tyre pressure’ before you start making pointless comments that P!ss people off.

Not all of us have been around this forum for as long as YOU. It takes nothing to be polite.

Against the advice of many on here i’ve stuck to the handbook pressures of 1.8f & 2.0r (bar). With some spirited summer driving & one trackday (200miles) the wear is pretty even so far on the A048’s. A little more wear on the rears, & a tad more on the LH set (it was a clockwise circuit).

A word of caution though is i run mine on a 111R with standard suspension, so i am probably not getting the best from them to directly compare with an S2 Exige.

Normal tootling around I run as per the book 26F/29R.
Track days I’ll drop to 22 cold all around, do a few laps and adjust to 24 hot F and R.
Tyre wear is pretty even, seems to suit my driving style.

Shut up your p!ssing me off as well!

i have to admit i run mine at 28-29 COLD and still get more than 6k miles on road use - 70% motorway miles. So i really cant agree with the peeps who say this pressue is over inflating and leads to premature wear.

Are your tyres wearing more in the middle?

Discussed tyre pressures with B and C when my Exige was being serviced. They said that Lotus determined their recommended tyre pressures for 048’s after extensive testing round their track and so those are the ones to use for optimum grip, handling, etc.

The same company that delivered my car with just under 4 degrees of toe on the rear axle.

Uldis - surprisingly not. In fact, I completely forgot - I’ve yet to replace the fronts… 11500 miles use so far and not yet on the indicators even in the middle of the tyre.

And a quick search reveals.

My only explanation is that you drive the car exactly like Lotus expected a driver to.
Therefore those recommanded pressures work.

They don’t work for others, in my case the first set I had (with the recommended pressures) wore down the middle only and lost all grip after about 10 mins on track (they were ballooning).

For me, after about 6 sets of Yokos, the only sensible grip and tyre wear I’ve to has been with 19F/17R psi (cold, next morning after the trackday).
For road, 22F/23R psi wears them even and gives me the best grip.

But them I’m crazy…

Yokohama recommend 25-26 psi at running temp. On the road you’d probably run around 24psi cold, for track around 20 cold at the front and 18 at the rear.

I have run them up to 30psi hot on the track and this has some advantages, but you can only run for around 15 minutes before they overheat. I tend to aim for a running 26 psi now.
