Turbo vs s/c

So, im pretty much decided to go down forced induction route for my 111R…

Many reasons why, but mainly to add some torque and daily drivabiliy as well as having more fun between the corners. Ofc improving lap results is good, but driver training is where the priority is for the time.

Remember, my car is a daily driver and sees a lot of track.

I narrowed my choice down to two kits, lets say for simplicity that both will cost me around $9k (~5k) + clutch + lsd + accusump + installation.

The kits are:
Forcedfed 275 turbo
http://forcedfed.com/elise/turbokits/forcedfed.html

Komo-tec 250S supercharger
http://www.komo-tec.com/product_info...roducts_id/400

Added weight is about the same, maybe ff is a bit lighter, but nothing significant.

Peformance as tested by independant magazines:

Turbo:
275 bhp @ 7 psi
200 lb.ft
0-60 4.2
0-100 9.0
1/4 mile 12.3

Supercharger:
260 bhp @ 6 psi
185 lb.ft
0-60 4.2
0-100 9.5
1/4 mile 12.5

Im am heavily leaning towards Komo-tec kit. Why:

  1. Reliability is one of my main concerns. Komo-tec uses water cooling and runs lower boost. Also as far as i understand, getting turbo tuned correctly is a lot harder and more importaint.
  2. Supercharger power delivery is a slight preference for me, its no big deal at 6-7 psi, but im more of a n/a or s/c guy. I aslo think s/c suits the car a lot better.
  3. Peformance difference is the only turbo advantage, but its really not that significant, and i will readily sacrifice a slightly better 0-100 for improved reliability and durability.

What do you guys think?

I’m totally with you on that one. Go for the supercharger. As you say, the power delivery will suit the car better. And for me the fact that Lotus took the same decision is a bonus. Have you considered the Bemani kit?

Hi Val
You seem to be having this debate for quite a while now.
If you really are going to take the plunge and get one then maybe a trip to Germany is in order to talk through the kit and its instillation. Then you could drive it too.
Two things to think about are
1 The KT kit looks good and has low boost etc but it is new on the market that would worry me a bit but hopefully a visit to KT would put your mind at ease.
2 My main worry is with either kit is the installation - are there exact instruction to fitting the kit? I would be very tempted to get a tec over to Russia to help fitment then you know its been done right(although it will cost you a bit)

FF kit had some problems with the piggy back but they seem to have sorted that. I would speak to people on ET who have had non FF shops fit the kit see what their experiences are. Would there also maybe a language barrier between your mechanic and the instructions - I would be worried about an incorrect translation.

As you know I am in the SC camp

The reason he has ruled the Bemani kit out is the it would be a no no for installation by a non trained tec

Well, im going to put deposit down in november (a nice b-day present for myself ) so this is a final call pretty much.

  1. Yep, it worries me as well. But i figured that supercharges have been running on both stock lotuses and bemani for quite some time now with great reliability. So its pretty hard to mess anything up, hopfully they just improved the installation. Its not that Komo-tec just started doing kits yesterday. The people who drove it also seem to be very positive about it. Unfortunately no time for a visit.

  2. A great thing about komo-tec is that they have a russian speaking guy there, so they can talk my dealer through installation.

Also my dealer had recently installed 240r kit on regular exige, so they already have some experience.

Although FF is a great turbo kit, i just feel that komo-tec is a lot more sorted with some years of experience to learn.

I’m having the Komotec fitted in a couple of weeks

Heh

Well, actually now i got a deposit on FF, since in the end i figured it to be a lot more developed and satisfying then komo-tec.

Goodluck with whatever kit anyway!

We’ll have a more accurate comparison in a few weeks, I am fitting a rotrex supercharger to my Audi engine so we’ll be able to compare against the Audi Turbo’s

The reason I am going Supercharger is for it to be more driveable and I like to be different

The only difference between your car and the rest of the LOT grid is that we will be racing and you will still be messing with yours in the fooooking garage!!!

Remind me to come and get some shots of your car. That way when your car does not make it out of the paddock I can at least Photoshop it into some of the race shots

Mine should be there matey (as long as I don’t let Russ back in it ) or did you mean Dave’s???

I meant Dave’s car,…although thinking back to the luck you had last season maybe I should do the same for you

I am hoping I used up all of my bad luck last year. In all honesty the only goal I have set myself this year is to not retire due to a mechanical failure.

Amen to that

The car looked like it was going great yesterday. It would be interested to see what sort of times were being put in as you looked up there amongst the fastest. Car sounded great too.

Cheers matey!!!

Was anyone doing any timing? I saw it was described as a trackday (no timing) but the session for the racers was a test session (maybe timing allowed - if only to confirm transponders are all working?)

The timing beacon was on in the test sessions I think…did not hear anyone talking about times though.
