TRD Air Box

Glad it went well

Took it back off today to silicone seal the joint between the MAF housing and the adapter plate.
I tried blocking off the intake while it was running (it kept running!) it was sucking in air from the poor fit of the plate against the housing
Leaving till later on to refit to allow silicone to cure.

Meanwhile i,m fitting my stage 3 exhaust back on again cos now the supercharger drowns out the standard exhaust noise !!!

Will try to get to Oulton tomorrow for a noise test…

No MIL issues yet and it is a recommended upgrade from Lotus Sport, it is suggested for the S but as the N/A uses the same airbox I don’t see why not.

Cheers Ade- any website info/pics on it all? Where’s best to contact to confirm ok for N/A model and where did you order from? Is the item you receive all that you fit or do you need new filter etc?

Cheers, Jez

Jez, did you get an answer in the end (suitable for N/A)?
I need something quieter than the pipercross my car came with for bedford/goodwood next year, and i’m guessing this is about the same price as a std box.

Cheers,

Neil

So what’s a std air box and filter worth? Mine’s just taking up shelf space in the garage, but was hanging onto it in case I wanted to return to std.

Dunno, TRD one is 15 link but I think the filter is about 2/3 times that. I was going to phone around to see if TRD sold a cheaper one.

Dealers just got back to me. Standard airbox for a NA including filter is 308 + vat!
As I need the whole box as the TRD bit is just the bottom bit, i’ll need to think of something else to make it quieter.

you can pick up a standard air box for very little. I got one last year for 20.

Don’t talk the price down, I was about to put mine in the classifieds

Seriously though if anyone wants to make me a sensible offer drop me a pm.

Neil, sorry mate I haven’t got round to it yet. Just had 2 rear tyres fitted so not top of the agenda at the moment!!

I tried fitting one of these items today and I have to say at the moment I wish I hadnt bothered! This appears to be a very shoddy piece of tat. One of the three mounting holes is drilled about an inch from where it should be. Worst of all the TRD replacement air box and adaptor plate have banana shaped mounting surfaces so there is a gap between the filter and the body of the air box. Plus there is no gasket between the adapter plate and original air box. I will speak to my dealer tomorrow and see what they have to say about it.

My question above all is did any of you chaps get any type of gasket to go between the original air box and the new adaptor plate? I can tell JFK did not.

You are correct there…
1)The adaptor plate is indeed banana shaped…
2)The holes are not in the correct position …
3)Be sure to seal the gaps with sealant as grit reaching the engine/supercharger will nail it for sure.

All said and done though the intake sound is quite addictive… (Not as nice as twin 48 Dellorto’s however)
No adverse effects . ie.MIL lights

I’d say that i,m happy with the change otherwise I’d simply remove it. (and the cost of the box is minimal)
I,ve kept the original just incase I get tired of the howl

Thanks for the reply JFK. Since they all seem to be like that I will persevere with the one I have. I wonder if trimming the old original filter down to just the outer edge would do as a gasket instead of sealant?

I would imagine the outer edge would be too thick and would not conform to taking on the banana shape…

I think you will be right to persevere … althouugh sound of our cars is very subjective and what’s great for one’s ears will be not so great for anothers…

At the end of the day … if it sounds right for you then it’s a worthwhile mod… ( mine’s staying on!)

Quite a unique/unusual sound…
A tad like a straight cut gearbox whine (or reverse gear)
When coupled with a loudish exhaust it is more balanced if that makes sense ?
With a standard exhaust I think the whine is overpowering.

Try it and see m8!

PS. noise check at Oulton was 98 DB (static) @6000 rpm with Lotus stage 3 exh.

Will do. Im looking forward to the supercharger whine being louder. Years ago I almost got a mk1 MR2 SC because I loved the sound of the charger. Im going to experiment with semi permanently joining the adaptor plate to the MAF box and try to eliminate the banana shaped profile. When Ive done it I will try and post some picys on here.

Picture No.1 I have drilled two holes for the B&Q sourced stainless steel nuts and bolts. Be careful to drill to the side of the strengthening fins on the air box body.
Placing these bolts here forces the adaptor plate to loose its banana shape so the filter sits flat on the adaptor.

Picture No2. Disassemble and put a thick bead of sealant on the MAF body. Leave for half an hour to skin over, then put another thick bead of sealant on and immediately reattach the adaptor plate and screw down bolts.

Picture No3. Speaks for its self really. Hopefully job done! Have to wait for the weekend to try it out.

Sorry about the BIG pictures!!! My next lesson should be in scaling.

Just for future reference, mate, “www.photobucket.com” automatically scales pics for you.

Cheers Herr Pesky, Ill try that next time.

I like the rubber glove in the second picture (r/h side)…
Is that a gesture to Lotus?

I can’t believe that you had that sealant in the house. Evil stuff.

The rubber glove I hate it when it does that! Sealant hums a bit, but quite pleasant in a strange mine bending way. I’m going to sort those picys, they are annoying me now.
