trackaction day at oulton 2nd march

quick post to say that i did the above day on friday and it was a blast.

not heard of track action before but was invited by a friend who was running his old race Mk1 golf that he “bent” 8 yrs ago at oulton and has recently rebuilt with the addition of an astra VXR engine/gearbox/axle and “bits”

i had a look on line and i’m sure steve the organiser would agree wasn’t initially inspired by the web site - a little basic. but i discovered that steve and his team are tutors / marshalls etc at oulton and run the days out of season at good prices in conjunction with MSV who have run the previous days i have attended at oulton.
so 130 for a full open pitlane day with FREE tution thrown in seemed like a great deal.

upon arrival i saw an eclectic mix of motors and was initially worried that the differences in cars might lead to problems on track

full race teams running scirrocco’s / golfs
ariel atom with honda SC
600BHP nissan gt-r
7/8 westfields inc a beautiful V8
4/5 focus rs from club
renault 5 gt turbos from club
4/5 civic type r’s
old fiat 500
m5 on slicks
opel manta
etc.

however i couldn’t have been more wrong. the manners on track from absolutely everyone were brilliant, a keen eye in the mirror was all that was needed and i was surprised how empty the track was on occasion as lots of people spent the day tinkering / changing tyres/suspension etc.

my day was awesome - bone dry by 10am so fully able to test out the new suspension and lowered cam change.
that plus some free tuition from a funcup competitor driver
had me over 15 mph faster down the straights than my previous track day here. the cam change really helped get me back in the peak power band straight out the bends and the suspension which i still don’t feel that confident fiddling with put me through the corners flat and fast with no drama. the tutor commented on how planted the car felt and i agree it encouraged me to try a little harder to find the limits of the car.

so in summary an awesome day, well run, very well priced, only down side in the next day isn’t until october/november - but i really think we should consider an exiges meet as part of it, as i believe the price may be even keener for a group, steve also ran a prize draw for 3 folk to receive a full refund for the days trackday - so 3 very happy guys played for free.

With the price of TD’s seeming to be rising to unrealistic levels in the UK this was an unplanned for extra for me this year and i firmly believe in supporting / endorsing someone who seems to be trying his best to run a fair priced and well organised day for fellow car enthusiasts. thx again steve.
now how to pay for those new discs/pads/tyres for next time…

Great write up, Rich :sunglasses:

Great reading Rich, thanks for sharing.

Love Oulton, must get out there this year.

Cheers Rich

Nothing on there until Nov now?

Not that that will put Ben off, he’ll go to Oulton for a curry.

Ian

Lol Ian… Nice one Rich, have missed Oulton loads over the last two years…Seems there’s hope…

couldn’t believe my luck with the weather tbh, i’ve done it in july and druids was wetter than friday!

they seem every limited on events, as he said to me the prices charged by MSV for anything between april and sept are huge therefore they cant offer “reasonable” TD’s which is there aim.
nothing against MSv its all supply and demand, if folk will pay and it seems they will, you set the market price to be successful, and no doubt put some money back into the circuit.
1st time i’sd seen the “electronic” flags in use, they are a great addition easy to spot.

oh and my friends golf drove awesomely, he was a good 4/5 sec quicker than me, hitting 130 on the start finish and straight into druids. no turbo lag and seemingly bullet proof, had lots of visits to the garage as he pretty much passed everything inclusding the race prepped cars. will try post some pics in a bit
