track day helmets

Hi all, any advice on whether an FIA approved helmet’s really needed for track day use or would something like this do:

I take it some organisers / tracks require helmets to be FIA approved but I can’t imagine they actually check them.

Anyways any help would be great,

FIA approved is old news - the standard is SNELL.

FIA approved helmets tend to have a shorter ‘shelf life’ than SNELL approved

It’s your head but I value mine a lot more than 47.39 + VAT

I’d buy the best approved helmet you can afford - the most important piece of safety kit there is IMHO

Article here Breakdown of a Racing Helmet

Never had a helmet checked at a track day so pretty much anything goes really. My wife wears her vespa helmet!

Deffo go open face for a track day though, its so much nicer being able to easily chat with your passenger.

Sean
Fixed that for you LOL

Dave, I will have you know, I am a safe and considerate driver while on track.

Most of the time.

…fixed again

You will obviously need a helmet with a snorkel fitted Ben, to enable you to breath when you have left your window down and let your car fill up with water!

Lol - as I posted I could imagine you trying to think up a retort

fair point, tho i value my head at a lot more than the price of any helmet on the market so where does that leave me? I take it you’ve got a top end full face helmet, hans device, roll cage and SNELL approved race suit?

My question really is where to draw the line, i’d rather trackday with a mate so an openface helmet is preferable, plus i’m big enough that it’s easier to put a helmet on once i’m in the car so in an emergency trying to climb out a window with a full face helmet i’d be screwed. So open face it is, i’ll go for a mid range one at 200-350 which should be more than adequate for trackdays… yeah?

More and more people are wearing race suits for track days, i used to, but dont any more. Dont know why, I guess because its a bit of a phaff and track days for me are a social thing as much as anything else. I dont try half as hard on a track day as I used to when racing, so I guess (rightly or wrongly) I dont associate as much risk with track days.

V2 helmets are well regarded

Main thing is a good fit, I’ve got an Arai SK5 (karting version of the GP5) purely as it was in budget (~350) and fit nicely.

How did you guess ???

Helmet - check. Sparco Carbon Aramid
Hans device - check. Schroth
Roll cage - No but std T45 roll over hoop & full harnesses
Race suit - check. Alpinestars

I get the piss taken for all of the above because as Sean says its a trackday. The wall will still hurt the same as a race if I hit it at 100mph and will still catch fire if a fuel line goes

A mid range 300 helmet will be certified FIA or SNELL which was my original point. All the other kit is optional but if the worst happens I’ve done as much as I can

Suit and Nomex underwear - the only way to go!!

Because since you got married, you’ve added 2 stone to your weight, & the suit doesn’t fit anymore - deny that , if you dare!

I have put on zero weight since I got married. 83 kg’s baby!!!

83kg, maybe if I lost a leg

102KG and 103cm

I’d go for a full face helmet & an intercom if talking to a passenger was an issue.

I’m using a Peltor open face helmet at only 800g. Its approved in Swedish car racing as the Swedish have done a bit more whiplash studies than FIA. Works very well and is very comfortable to wear due to the light weight.
