Toyota gearbox - fully inspected

I have couple of C64 gearboxes for a Toyota Elise/Exige.

Fully inspected and rebuilt with an uprated 3rd gear snycro.

700 delivered ovno.

They are currently both stripped down on the work bench. At no extra cost I can have a lsd fitted at this stage if you supply the diff (or I can get it for you if that is easier)

Also I can have different gear sets fitted (jubu etc) if you want which will be at extra cost but only what it costs me to fit them, you will need to supply the gear sets.

Thanks

Gav

Interesting …
What’s the uprated 3rd gear Syncro and who makes them then Gav?
I’ve not heard of one until now.

It’s a bit like a normal 3rd gear synchro, but better.

Boothy you are clearly related to Pesky !

Boothy is exactly right… it’s like a normal 3rd gear syncro but better!!

Basically you use a fourth gear snycro in place of third, they are identical parts except for the material they are made from.

wow, didn’t know that. Why the hell would they make two identical parts out of different materials??? Manufacturers are weird!!

So …
The C64 is a great gearbox if …

  1. Is fitted with a quaife diff
  2. Is fitted with Jubu gears
  3. Is filled with redline oil
  4. Is fitted with a 4th gear syncro ring
  5. Is fitted with an oil cooler
  6. Is fitted with a LETSLA

That lot should put a dent in my bank balance !

Anyhow , the 4th gear syncro info is nice to know for when the time comes cheers Gav.

I still dont think its a ‘great’ gearbox to be fair.

The simple fact that you have to do so much to it in the first place, to get it to handle even the standard power of the engine, let alone everyone JSR has taken apart has had over heated bearings and stuff.

Just as an example, the Audi gearboxes I have experience with, just work, with nothing done to them and seem to take whatever abuse you throw at them.

Agreed Sean …
Now please pursuade John to stay in his workshop till he,s gotten one to fit !

Just out of interest, how much bigger/heavier are the Audi gearboxes? Usually strength goes hand in hand with weight unless you use quite exotic materials :frowning:

Ok so the story I have is that 3rd and 4th gear syncros where both exactly the same when the box was originally developed. Apparently toyota had issues with the 4th gear syncro wearing out in their cars so made it from a different (harder) material.

For what ever reason they kept the original 3rd gear syncro in place even though both 3rd and 4th are identical in physical dimensions. You can clearly see the difference though, 3rd is brass in colour where as the uprated 4th looks more like some type of alloy being silvery in colour.

It’s a very cheap mod to do when the gearbox is apart, even if it only lasts another 1000k over the std 3rd gear part it is worth changing while the box is in bits. It’s not something I would purposefully do if the box is a runner just for the sake of doing it.

I must be the only one who hasn’t had trouble, the c64 that was on my 2-11 had done over 5k of track/race miles with 270+ hp and was still going strong before it was taken out…

Then again I’m about the only one who races one and is also still on it’s original engine!! Not that im expecting it to go anytime soon but I have thought about taking it out just incase it does and I want to sell it one day, I can then put it back in so it all matched up on the docs.

So who wants one then? As much as I’d like to leave them on the shelf they have to go…

Ps as for why the boxes are stripped down in the first place - I bought 4 of them all as unknown quantities. Before I could sell any of them on I needed to make sure they are all tickety boo.

As it was they all looked in good condition just on the initial visual inspection when taken apart. The two that are left for sale have yet to be fully examined for any further wear that the eye can’t see. This will be done (and any parts that need replacing) when someone wants one, and as advertised it allows you to fit additinal components for little or no extra cost while they are still in bits.

Basically it will be as good as a s/h box will ever get…
