Torque settings for rear brake disks & callipers

Anyone know the torque settings for the rear brake discs and callipers on an S2 Exige? Just bought some EBC discs with Mintex M1144 pads and will be fitting them soon (once the broken wrist is fixed!)
If there are any pitfalls it would be nice to know also!

And if you come across the S1’s I’d appreciate it. Save me looking it up for my new rear disk/pads this weekend.

Don’t foget your thread glue.

Ian

The countersunk screw which holds the disk on doesn’t have a torque spec but as long as its reasonably tight it should be fine. The road wheel bolts do all the real work.

Do you need to remove the caliper if you take the pads out first? Is it different to the Elise manual I’m looking at? I’ve got the S2 Exige manual at home so I’ll double check later.

This has been bugging me, my colleague reckons that if the disk sticks to the hub as they often do then you may want the callipers off to improve access. He also said he uses a grinder to cut thorough the raised central spigot which then frees them off the hub, otherwise the amount of hammering you’d have to use to remove it could damage the wheel bearing?

Anyway, torques - Apply permabond A134 to the threads (I presume thats a threadlocker) The upper M10 bolt should be done to 45-50Nm (33-37lbft) and the lower M8 should be done to 26-30Nm (19-22 lbft) - These figures are from the S2 Elise manual.

Many thanks I’ll let you know how I get on (probably a couple of weeks time)and if I find any niggles.

Bob you mention the S2 Elise manual, is the the one that came with the car or did you manage to purchase a maintenance manual? If so how much was it and is there one for the Exige?

Here they are.

One of the few good US federal requirements - emissions related info has to be made publicly available. Lotus, like most manufacturers, choose to make the entire service manual (excluding the Toyota bits) available.

Evening all, I’ve just checked the S2 Exige manual and the torques are the same as posted above.

Alan, I’ve bought the official Lotus Service Notes for the 111r/Federal Elise/Exige, its a black A4 hardback folder about 2" thick. You can get it from any dealer (part no A120T0327J) or on line from Bell and Colvill here

It should be 84.82 but I got a couple of quid off for asking nicely, its very worthwhile, its got a lot of useful info in it including wiring diagrams which may come in handy if I decide to fit a new ECU…

There are also manuals for the engine and gearbox but they are very expensive (B120T0327J - 22, C120T0327J 112, D120T0327J - 23) so I’ve bought a Toyota workshop manual of Ebay for 2?!

If you get stuck and need to know anything drop me a pm.

Followed the link to:

“Subscribers have access to all up-to-date emissions related documents and information regarding federal Esprit 4 Cyl / V8 (1994 Onwards) and Elise / Exige (2005 Onwards).”

but the next link asks for:

24 hour Subscription = $25
30 Day Subscription = $300
1 Year Subscription = $2500

is it a US federal requirement to rip you off for the info? If so it might be cheaper to ignore the US federal requirement and just buy a copy off EBay

Oh yeah, the Elise S2 Manual is a pdf I found on the internet. Its basically the same as the manual I bought but doesn’t have any Exige/Toyota related stuff to its of limited use to us hardcore Exige nuts

No, but it’s allowed; (the fees are limited by our gov.).

So… 14 one time to Lotus or 3.50 one time to a nutcase in a bathrobe who might never mail your cd.

Unless, of course, you find place to download them from…

Thanks again, I’ll go look for the Elise PDF job those Lotus boys sure do know how to make a profit, it’s a shame really since they could just get away with the cars being so enjoyable and then not rip us off for everything else, such is life!
