Tips on replacing spot lamps please

I hope you returned it to its rightful owner

The ratchet had his name engraved on

Stanley, or Adrian Molegrip???

Seem to remember Jonny Herbert had a spanner left in the cockpit of his F1 car during a qualification session a few years ago.

Spanner? Nah - that was just Jonny.

I think you need to take the front undertray off

Thanks steve. If I’ve got the car jacked up on ramps and have the splitter off, I guess the front under tray isn’t the end of the world.

Don’t forget to take a few piccies and post them up here - would be useful to know.

Get some of the plastic covers for the new lights - will save you having to do this again.

Sadly not. One has gone, just blown. It was already covered.

And knowing this job, I’m going to get it hooked back up and find it’s actually the wiring and not the spot!

I’ll see what I can do with pics (maybe tricky from under the car!).

Sorted! And I didn’t have to dismantle the car.

I jacked the car up (in prep to remove the spliter), put it on ramps and had a crawl underneath.

I wondered if the there was going to be access to the back of the hole the spot lamp is wired through via the exhaust vent holes for the oil cooler (which can be seen in the pic).

From the rear side holes it is possible to get to the plug enough so that it can be plugged back in. There’s no way you could do anything more than plug it back in without removing alot of panels.

I was under the impression that the spots were sealed units, but as you can see from the following pics the back can be removed and the bulb replaced.

Other tips I would pass on:

  • WD40 on the plastic screws helps them come out/go in
  • Undo the screw behind the ‘half moon’ last to help remove it at an angle (and obviously put it back in first)
  • Spin the lamp to help get it out/in
  • Use plastic covers on the spots to prevent them getting cracked

Yay!

Ian
