Hi all,

That looks like the part I need…
part number 13540-88600 for a 2zz 1.8 for the timing chain tensioner
( above is for SEO )
Poked around and got it from here : http://hurleyperformanceparts.co.uk/Genuine_Toyota_2ZZGE_chain_tensioner/p3375630_19993562.aspx
I think I might have the tiniest of oil weeps from behind the chain cover somewhere, so if you’re going to DIY this then I’d appreciate photos of access etc
I have a chap doing it for me as I am mental with work at the minute. There is a rear seal for the crank that can weep ( mine didnt ) and the oil dipstick o ring can move about and fail to seal. This is where mine was leaking from …
I’m still not sure, I don’t have a leak that’s strong enough to drip onto the undertray or show any appreciable oil-loss between changes but the back of my block seems to be a bit ‘sweaty’ every time I look at it, and it seems to collect around the join between the sump and the block. The obvious thing to finger would be the sump gasket sealant, but I’ve removed/refitted the sump twice and I’m fairly sure I haven’t cocked it up both times - so now wondering if there’s a slight weep further up somewhere.
I gave it all a good degrease/wipe last time the car was jacked up so I’ll be checking it again soon. It’s certainly not bad enough for me to actually put any real effort into it, at least not yet.
Hi Andy
Did this solve your issue, I’ve noticed a rattle on start up that sounds like the chain. not looked into it fully yet just gathering info as you do
New tensioner made absolutely no difference what so ever.
Still only does it on cold, first time of starting.
Ahh, interesting.
Could be the chain and guides need replacing then, on my old civic type R I had the same noise once and this was the cause. I’ll have a good look into it when I get home (which won’t be till march sadly )
I think you will find it’s very common if you do some digging. Only emphasised by the lack of use if it’s been parked for a while like most of them are. If it makes the rattling noise every time you start the car then obviously there is an issue.
well the car hasn’t moved for a 18 months and to be fair gets left in the garage for long periods so sounds very likely,
is it a clam off job to change?
Had a Corolla with the same engine that had done 120k miles. No noise on start up. Or ever to be fair. Checked and changed the tapered cam bolts to be sure and they were OK.
I’d buy it back if I wasn’t doing so many miles a month!
Agree there are many Celicas around with big miles on them, generally a very good reliable engine platform
