ticking at 2k rpm

Hi all, i have a ticking noise at 2k rpm. The ticking gets worse as the revs build up to 2k then decrease after 2k. It went in for its service about a month ago (it was doing it before then) and the garage didn’t mention it. Its done 15k miles. Anything to worry about? look at? TADTS?
Cheers

Get the cam cover off and check its not your cams. Mine were very ticky when pootling and then started making horrendous noises at max rpm.

Alternatively could be a noisy injector? Try some fuel treatment.

Mine is a bit tappetty at tickover and low revs (below 2000) but I was told by more than one person that the toyota engine is like that… you guys have the same ?

Thanks lads, Bob- it does sound a bit ruff when being driven very hard, ie when on 2nd cam, but was not like that before it went in for its service, it only had the ticking at 2k rpm. Its ok when the engine is cold, the ticking starts once the engine has been warmed up. Was yours like this and what did they do to the cams to stop it? (forgive me but i dont know much about engines) I still have the aftersales warranty, i may give them a ring tomorrow to see if they can take a look at it next week.

hi tanman,
i have answered your thread on seloc,
but you did not mention that it sounded rough on second cam.
yes mine does tick under 2k but on second cam its sounds sweet ,deffo not rough.
i think you should get it into the garage under warranty and get a loan car (mines loaners a 111r)that you can rag the boll@ckd off free of charge.

Cheers demus, yep best to ring garage tomorrow morning me thinks! I’ll have a chat with them and see what they say
Thanks
Tanman

Mine needed a new inlet cam and followers. Its smoooooth now and revs to the redline sweetly. New cam and followers are 212 (from a toyota dealer, probably 600 from Lotus!!) and I bet stratstones fleeced Lotus for 1000 in labour!

Could also be the accessories belt tensioner. I changed mine because it was sounding like a diesel at low rpm. This issue should have been solved though some years ago but i would still look into it.

Phoned the garage this morning and taking it back next week. I remembered this morning that they had had to drill the bolts out of the cat to take it off as they were rusted on (i had new heat shields put on when serviced and this needed to be done apparently) and i suspect the rattling at high revs maybe something to do with this. Will let you know what happens

Well dropped the car in today and they said they could not hear the ticking (typical I thought), then when i drove it home- yep you’ve guessed it i couldn’t hear it either. It was doing it on the way up and now when i get home i can hear it, just wouldn’t do it at the garage.
They had a good check over the car and spent about an hour looking, just told me to keep an eye (ear) open for it. If it gets worse then they said to take it back.
Fair play to Andy at Westover he phoned up Lotus about it but they only had 4/5 reported cases of the inlet cam being a problem.
So there we go.
