The gear box!

With this ‘move’ to the Yota, I have read some posts on seloc that go on and on (surprise eh!) about the ‘problems’ with the Yota gearbox… esp 3rd gear!

Does anyone here have any experience of any snags? It is my understanding that the box is fine for up to 200lbs ft torque? I guess in particular does the CN upgrade come close to marginising the standard box? I would kind of like my move to Japenese engineering to be smooth and reflect their undoubted skills!!!

Thx for your input!

Cheers, Pete.

Mine has been fine with 240-260bhp. I expect Ade will be along shortly with much more feedback than I can muster

Yes 200lb/ft seems to be e relastic breaking point, also a lot of 2-11s seem to suffer premature failure, but this might be due to constant track abuse and 260hp
Mine lasted well with the torque and there are several road cars running the same as me that haven’t failed, I think a lot of the failure is down to high shock loading when the gear is very hot hence my new gears and oil cooler.
If you are going to track the car seriously I would consider the JSR cooler kit at minimum

Thx Ade!

I am guessing then that the CN upgrade just puts you below the 200lb torque mark? I guess it would have to be ‘reliable’ for them to be doing so many eh!

So Sean, whats this cooler all about then? (aside from cooling the oil dude!!) Info would be appreciated!

Is a ‘short shifter’ kit available for the yota and is it a good move if so? I know the ‘K’ benefited hugely from this!

Boy! All these questions!!! This is like ‘newbie’ time all over again!!!

The JSR kit will be what they designed for me, I’m not sure if they will use the same pump I got from the US but it probably would be a good idea it is quiet and efficient plus reasonably priced.

There was a quick shift kit available from the US I think but I’ve never bothered myself, just needs adjusting correctly

Try Jonny “Balboa” he’s got one and using it in LOT cobber.

Perhaps you can take me for a few pax laps at Anglesea mate!

That would be cool… even for an n/a fella!.. (you see young Jonny Fox, I have crossed over to the Dark Side)…

Pete, have a butchers at this;

Yep thats one less Christmas card I have to write

As Mr Fox says been running this short shift kit for last two seasons, got the version 1

Any aboslute work of art and great in the car. did not need any adjustment once fitted worked straight away

will definatley be upgrading to the newest version over the winter

Troy also very helpful and a complete thread here

Must add my experience Had my 04 exige nearly 5 years.Soon after getting the car i bolted up the shifter mechanism and adjusted the cables and added MT90 gear oil,for the last 3 years or so its been putting out 199 lbs ft torque.
Its done 32000 miles now [about 16000 with the performance mods and a few trackdays[25?]The gearbox and clutch are origional and ive had no problems with baulking or breakage.I drive it fairly brisk, but i do keep it off kerbs and rumble strips.

My car has just touched 30k, good portion of which has been at 300bhp/200lbft and both myself and the previous owner track cars so this not all road miles either. Apart from a weak syncro between 3-2 (non-power related), Ive never had problem with the gearbox. The syncro if anything has just made me perfect double clutching . Im also still on the standard clutch which even managed a few mile runs at York raceway last week.

If Im honest, I dont expect the gearbox to last which is why Ive not upgraded the clutch and fixed the syncro yet (waiting for somebody bright spark to come up with a fix , but the gearbox will not self destruct as quickly as some have said.

I agree, it will not self destruct on the first outing, mine took about 2k miles on track and 6k on the roads before it stripped 3rd, I am however sure the failures will be more frequent if I add any more torque.

Hi All,

My 3rd gear broke last week in Italy. Made a hell of a racket and was undivable back to blighty.

What is the fix ? where does the uprated gear set come from and how much does it cost. I will add an oil cooler. Which one and where from.

I installed recently the letsla gear linkage kit nad Lotus sport uprated linkage cables.

Thanks

Speak to John at JSR, you need the Jubu racing semi helical gearset and JSR will do you the bespoke gear oil cooler like mine, the downside is the oil pump and gearset took a month or so to get due to long order times.

I put in a 2nd hand celica gearbox for 300 to last me till the new one was completed.

Mine made a terible noise when it went as well, but I still drove it home from Spa.

Did it sound like this?

Exige Gearbox Failure - YouTube

Sounds soooooooooooo nasty :frowning:

This is turning into an interesting read!

It seems to be the Yota version of the ‘K’ head gasket!

So, is this just going to be a matter of not if, but when???

I find it difficult to believe that Toyota have designed a gearbox that actually appears to potentially fall short of being ‘fit for purpose’ here?

Anyway, how much is the ‘fix’ from JSR!!! And should this be taken as a get it fixed before it breaks prevention measure, or just wait until it breaks???

Welcome to Yoto ownership!!!

Not really Pete. The K HGF ocurred with standard factory output, whereas the 'yota issues happen with modified outputs well above what Lotus offer
