Would urge you to be careful with the RX7 route. A friend had one which he’d had chipped, it was very fast but he ended up reverting to standard programming as he couldn’t keep it going in petrol. A tweaked rotary can get through an amazing amount of fuel for it’s capacity. Even in standard form the car was pretty unreliable, to the extent that he bought an old 626 to tool about in whilst it was off the road.
He’s the only friend who’s had one so this may not be representative of all RX7’s. But does seem to be a common theme in this thread.
I know it’s not a rwd but what about a Civic type R, seem brisk enough at track days, cheaper than the Exige.
When you rejoin the fold you can keep the engine
I’ve been doing some research and if you get another ECU to run it all, keep the power standard then apparently you can see 25mpg pretty easily, bit like the VHPD and an Emerald So with thtat in mind it won’t be much more than the Lotarse… Plus I don’t do that many miles.
I think a lot of their problems come from the ease of just cranking up the boost to get more power… Like all turbo’d cars really, but that’s when you start getting into trouble, like tuning anything
I saw one of the owners club’s cars yesterday and they are really really lovely looking!
Engine rebuilds come in at about 2k all in, so less than any VHPD I’ve seen for sale.
Well, I think I’ll see how it goes, it may be a case of keep it for a month and then sell it off again
I do admit they’re a cheap car to run… Once you’ve replaced everything on them
That said, if I didn’t have any monies outstanding on it I’d keep it for that reason, but as I do and really want to get 100% then it has to go sadly.
CTR’s have come right down in price!!! Blimey! Still, a bit too boy racer for me really, too many of them about and all in my area are driven by total c**t’s So I’d fit in loverly
Sorry to here the car has to go mate, not good news .
On the RX7 front, I can see why you want one, I looked at these before getting the Exige. Things I noticed were the insurance quotes which made me cry, the fuel consumpsion and the frequency of engine rebuilds. As with any rotary engine the seals are a week point although I think they can be replaced with far superior after market seals. I was also told that you have to be very careful in your choice of oil and that the engine don’t like modern synthetics (if i remember rightly). You have to be careful with grey imports too but that goes without saying.
Well, for the first car purchase ever I’ll have my eyes open and be very paitent to get the right car!
But 60k to 80k for rebuilds and then you’re good to go doesn’t seem to bad to me, then it’s fine, just change the oil and filter is all you can do kind of thing
The people I have known with RX-7’s have had engine go more regularly than that. My old insurance broker lost a couple in about 40K miles I think. That said I have also heard that better rotor seals makes that world of difference…
Tho I’m thinking I may ditch the shitreon and maybe get a 200sx to run around in while I look for something, a nice intro into working with turbo’s and still RWD… Hmmm…
No storage is do able, it has to go, I’m fully commited now! Need to clear the finace on it and start doing more traveling, learning and generally funmaking (really would like to do a lot more snowboard for example)… And be in a position where I can earn less money for a better life
You can get a nice mid-nineties BMW M3 E36 for 6-7k (Not the EVO version). RWD, LSD, not particularly quick around a track cause they’re too heavy but good fun and pretty much bomb proof.
I have a motorsport elise and I just use the M3 for a bit of drifting practice really. You can really take liberties with them and their easy to control.
Cheap shot that mate! As you know I got a little help from Mr Balls aerial atom
Should be there at Oulton. Gear box going back in this week so should have the car early next week.So that’ll be the best part of 10 weeks to fix the car
I understand they can even be had with a ‘pack’ which included juicy Ohlins. Plenty of non-dealer specialists. None of the complicated(/expensive) 911 stuff. Under 10k.
Masterstroke Ian A lot of good high miles examples around but it is a Porsche and built for it. I considered one of these as a second car and I like them a lot. Come on Mark, you know it makes more sense than some rotary thing…like this one
Hmmm, 'tis a good choice… But a porker just isn’t a porker unless the engine is slung way over the back axle, has leathal understeer followed by increadably violent snap oversteer
