Stinky!

Hi Guys - has anyone had any experience of reduced stinkyness after fitting a sports cat? My exige has the Lotus MotorSport exhaust (janspeed) and bypass pipe. I had an Emerald fitted last year and this helped but I’m still clibing out of the car smelling like a vintage racer!

I moved the tail pipe as far back as poss (thanks for this advice Russ) and again this mede a difference.

The only thing I have not done is had the rear clam off and made sure the cabin is sealed.

If anyone thinks a sports cat will help where do I get one from?

Ooh, er , missus! I have the same exhaust, I think, recently fitted and no cat. It does pong a bit but it’s not so unpleasant to my nose.
No one has commented on my odour when I climb out of the car . . . and I can’t say that the stench is overwhelming.
Someone following in an open Elise commented last weekend that , “it smells like a race car” (and sounded like one by all accounts). My wife who is super-sensitive to this sort of thing confirms that there is no smell in the cab.
Is the dividing window from engine compartment a good seal?

Hi Thommo - I am also using Castrol 0W-40 which I think is a bit thin as its using quite a bit. I have used it all now so it’s time for an oil change and something a tad thicker.

This might get rid of most of the problem. I have put up with it for 2 years but the novelty of that smell is wearing off fast.

I might even bang the standard cat back on to try it?

Mine always used to stink. I sealed around the rear bulkhead, and the openings in the dash. See previous threads by Uldis about this. It certainly helped with the smell, as well as the heat coming into the cabin in Summer.

I believe Steve and Fiona eventually traced the problem to a leak somewhere in the exhaust. It really shouldn’t smell that bad in the cabin.

Yep, exhaust leak. The fumes used to make my eyes water and give me a headache. All sorted now though.

I have the same setup as you Simon, and I’m stinky too. Not much, but a bit. You do get out after a long drive smelling of engines, but not exhaust smells. I was thinking of a motorsport engine cover to increase stinky hot airflow.

Maybe its just people from up north who smell like this?

Don’t expect the engine cover to solve the problem. It didn’t work for me

Thanks guys - Yep Andy it is the same not exhaust just ‘engines’. I suspect changing the oil will be the easiest to try first.
