Steering clunk

Noticed yesterday that if I turn the wheel whilst stationary I get a light clunk through the wheel. It does it both ways.

I did a quick search and found a bit about loose steering rack. Does this sound right?

Cheers

Possibly a “worn” rack, rather than a “loose” one.

Either way, suggest you get a dealer/independent to check it out.

Will do. Only done 8,000 miles

little bit of play isn’t the end of the world. I have a faulty steering rack fitted which currently rattles like hell…just in the process of getting a new one fitted on warranty. I wouldn’t bother spending 450 on a new rack unless the play is bothering you.

My rack was worn on an 05 plate with 14k miles and replaced under warranty. It gave a slight notchy click either side of centre, and only at slow speeds.

Sounds the same as mine then. I am well out of warranty though.

I would not panic too much just yet, check under the dash, there is a coupling iirc 13mm head bolt, if that gets loose it can cause a clunk.
My new exige has a crack at low speeds on the steering but every other fed spec dash I have driven has done the same… I have only driven three but maybe tadts?

I had this too 10k on mine…both ways clunck clunk! It was in and out start of the year with various isssues…I can’t think what it was but I’ll check and post tomorrow…all sorted now tho, not too much of an issue…back soon

I had the same on mine and was sorted by lotus sport by tightening the bolts behind/below the dash

Durr what with the breaks squealing and a MIL light yesterday totally forgot will catch up next week

It’s turns out nothing was done, kind of thought so actually. The car was sat doing nothing for a week or two but after a day or so use was ok It was bloody clunky though, right noise. Good luck

Thanks for checking. I’ll get my head under the dashboard to see if anything looks loose. if not a trip to Sinclaires may be required.
