Starter Motor S1

I have an issue with my starter Motor and would like to change it.
Does anyone know the Bosch or Hella compatible spare part number?
Is it the 1.4 kW version?
10 or 12 Teeth?

Thank you for your help.

Hi - what is the problem with your starter motor?

I found Wood Auto very good for parts when I had issues with mine. Their website is:

woodauto. com

They have a huge stock of motors and parts, plus their knowledge is exceptional!

Sometimes the cog doesn’t t engage on the flywheel.

Thank you

I had a similar problem some years ago. Initially I thought it was the battery that was failing, but changing that didn’t solve the issue.

Speaking to Woods, it was suggested that it was the pinion and lever. I bought a new assembly from them, fitted it myself and the fault was sorted.

The part number for that is SDV3198.

Thank you for the help.

Kind regards

This is how the cog of the starter looks like:

Check the ring gear on the flywheel as well… :frowning:

The ring gear on the flywheel seems to be ok, but I will double check it asap.
Note:
All the parts have been changed when we changed the clutch assembly as far as I can remember
The car was only started a few times since then.

Still under construction with an enormous delay caused by the pandemic…

Thank you

The amount and type of wear on the starter pinion, along with the corrosion on its shaft, suggests the lever/pivot assembly that moves the pinion into engagement is very worn or sticking.

The good news is that the assembly can be purchased and replaced.

Alternatively it may be the solenoid isn’t pulling down as far as it should. Stripping down the motor should reveal any issues.

This is the replacement flywheel from Elise-Parts that we mounted when we replaced the clutch assembly.

I already ordered a regenerated starter motor, but will probably dismantle the part and have a look asap
and probably repair the oem part from Magneti Marelli.

In the meanwhile I repaired the original starter motor with the spare part ordered from Wood Auto.

job done

For the benefit of anyone else who may experience the same problem in the future, was it the pinion/lever part that needed replacing? Or was the cause something else?

The primary problem was that the gear was incorrectly shrinked on the flywheel (!) and consequently
the starter-cog was consumed abnormally (work performed by a Swiss “specialist” by the way).

After having replaced the clutch and the flywheel during the complete overhaul, sometimes the starter didn’ t engage on the gear…

Problem solved with the new part delivered by Wood Auto (many thanks to “tlracer” for the tip).

Cheers

Remounted the repaired starter motor today.
Everything works nicely.

Problem solved.

Excellent!

Starter motors in general seem to suffer from minor but problematic faults - a case in point is the small Denso units. These are generally very reliable but the solenoid contacts wear and they stop working. Fix takes 10 minutes plus a few readily-available and inexpensive parts.
