Just thought I’d let you know of my experiences of this.
But, to first acknowledge that other ECU’s are available to!
Shipped to the UK with a technician as they were keen to ensure the first one went smoothly.
Genuinely P+P, take out old one, stick new one in. I’ve got the auxillary access point mounted in the cabin, so as I had the interior out anyway, I hooked that up no bother.
The mapping at TDI went well. Sam seemed to get a handle on the adaptronics very quickly, although some of the software may not be as intuitively laid out as when dealing with , say, Syvecs. Easy fix apparently.
Ran it at Spa. The cam cross over was a bit lively and I was running a bit rich, so went back last week and Sam has fettled the rough edges.
I’ll probably need one further trip in the winter to check the cold start, but seems pretty close now.
I’ll be giving it some beans next week at Goodwood, but it’s at Essex Autosport at present getting the SSC 3rd/4th and cryogenically treated FD inserted.
They are running 450 brake Yota’s and haven’t broken a box yet.
Hi Graeme , hope your well ,
Jeeze Is that 280hp at the wheels ?
Do you still have the Marston fitted and how is it coping on the dyno & track , do you have any new data ?
What do Essex do to bolster the gearbox ?
yes , hub power, 2.8 pulley.
That’s the first session, before the tinkering
I was awaiting 3rd and 4ths locally but these are not to be produced in the timescale I had available.
Jubu’s new 3+4s , not made by drexler, apparently have a bit more noise than there originals. I’ve gone with the SSC ones which they tested back to back against Jubus, and they said were quieter and more efficient on the dyno.
As for the cryo thingy. They polish all the surface cracks out and stick it in a cold bath for 4 days (simplistic explanation). Does it make a difference? I don’t know, but it works for them and at a cost of several hundred pounds to have the gearbox in and out, I thought I’d try to do the job once.
I also bought a long celica 6th and will have that put in as well as a Quaife
I’m not sure if they just polish these, but they are specially manufactered for them by an Oz based engineering firm. Whether frozen or not , they are what is used in the 450 bhp Yota’s. The FD is a standard Toyo one which is then treated. I decided to go with this as I wanted the standard ratio rather than the 5:1. The Jubu 5:1 is also quite noisey , so I’m told.
If they are telling you their gears are “more efficient” on the dyno as a selling point run away from them…
Don’t believe everything these guys are selling.
It’s not a selling point to me, however, the transmission losses were less with their gears than with Jubus. As there’s 12-13% loss in the transmission (another point of discussion), what do we reckon 0.25% improvement (I’didn’t ask as it’s not relevant), As said, I don’t give a shit about that, but they are ( apparently) less noisey, which I do give a shit about.
Appreciate you not wanting to see me being ripped off, but i do actually trust these Guys, besides, messenger/ shooting comes to mind.
SSC are Aussies.
I believe they will be available through TDI, soon, as will the ECU
A rough idea of prices is on their website.
I used Essex to do the box rebuild as they were recommended, rebuild on site, were knowledgable when I spoke to them and were well located.
John and I have spent a huge amount of time looking at alternative gearboxes for the S2 and I am sure more than a few other companies have too.
The issues are finding a box that is known to be strong, have the correct ratios and will fit. The issue with fitting is the drive shaft that runs behind the engine. On a lot of boxes, it means removing a chunk of the block to clear the shaft, which is obviously far from ideal.
It is not a trivial task. I know Frank is gonna pipe up again about his box, but I think all of us UK folks just think the ratios are wrong for our purposes.
Frank you know I love you and your car, so I aint having a go or anything.
Got the car back from essex with the new 3rd and 4th, final drive and Quaife.
The most noticable thing is how great the change is now with the new linkages. Not cheap but definately the best thing to happen to a Yota gearbox.
Gave it loads of beans at Goodwood on saturday, passed the noise police and everything running smoothly.
I’m actually going to contact JSRacing as soon as you are open after new year’s day as I want to discuss options. I run the Komotec 280 and I have jubu 3,4 and final drive. The question is: is there a reasonably priced and reliable upgrade to take me up to say, 330 bhp before going for the Audi conversion? when I say reliable also refer to the Jubu’d 'box. Or do I leave everything as it is and go straight for the swap. My car is tracked. Mostly time-attack.
