This is the post I put up on mloc…

Well what a fantastic trip!

Its always fun going away on a road trip with your mates, but this year it was especially good as we went to the Hungarian F1. (It also helped that it was a great a race with the changeable conditions.)

Day 1: Channel tunnel to Zurich:

Train first thing in the morning then we drove through France on toll roads and motorways to Zurich(Switzerland). Its a nice place but due to the exchange rate at the moment its a very expensive place to eat and drink.

Day 2: Drove from Zurich to Innsbruck(Austria).

Not that far but we went via loads of the mountain passes which were as excellent as always, so it took all day. If youve never pushed on in a Lotus on a mountain pass with nothing between you and a drop that is certain death then you havent lived. I find it even more of a buzz than trackdays, especially overtaking motorbikes that think they are going quickly!!

Day 3: Drove from Innsbruck to Gyor(Hungary).

This turned out to be like our Top Gear challenge day. The plan was to drive in a pretty direct line avoiding the motorways and going via mountain passes. The main aim was to drive the Grossglockner pass, after a few sat nav issues we finally found it. Unfortunately is was soaking wet, even so Wayne cracked on a good pace at the front and it turned out to be one of the best roads we have ever driven on. (they charge you 25 euro for the pleasure, but its worth it.) Its so high your int he clouds and we made a snowman at the top of the mountain (pictures to follow.)

Then the madness started… It was well into the afternoon at this point and we were still 300 odd miles from Gyor. The following few hours were one of the most tense but enjoyable drives Ive ever had. The adrenalin of leading a group of lotus at what felt like Mach 1, through un-lit roads with no cats eyes through the small roads of west Hungary. The roads were in a pretty bad state and we were driving through villages/towns in the dark and all the buildings had shutters and bars on them with not a light on anywhere. It felt like the 3rd world, Beruit or something. We arrived in Gyor late but decided to have a few drinks in the amusingly named Pirate Dance Bar. Most amusing part of the night was Pete getting his arse felt up multiple times by a bloke while waiting at the Bar. Unfortuantly from that point on we could find a joke that related to it for the rest of the holiday (poor lad). Im sure well forget about it in a few years time Pete !!

Day 4: Hungarian F1.

Only a short drive to the F1 from Gyor, disappointingly we only saw one other good car all day (a white Ferrari on the way to the track). Only a few delays on the way into the track so we arrived early at the track and walked around all the general admission areas while the support races were on. The Hungaroring is a natural bowl so you get good views from grass/sand areas around most of the track. Unfortunately for spectating it was a slow drizzle all day, but for those of you who watched the race it did make it an amazing race to watch. We left pretty quickly after the race and the traffic was pretty good, even back through the centre of Budapest. It was great with people waiting on bridges watching for nice cars and waving etc. Then a few hour drive back west to Linz in Austria.

Day 5: Linz to Reims.

Early start as we had a long way to drive today. It was helped as we decided to go back via the German autobahns, which helpfully were derestricted for large parts of our journey. Legally diving for long periods at over 100mph is very enjoyable, especially when you have a few trips up to Vmax. First attempt i got up to 148mph on my sat nav (which it about 159 on the speedo). Really wanted to reach 150, so with a long clear straight and the help of a slight downhill I managed 150 (just over 160 on speedo). Fuel, tyres and miles dont last long at that speed, what a buzz!!

Day 6: Reims to Derby

Motorway Toll roads up to the tunnel for a late morning train then a few hour drive back in the Uk, so back home by mid afternoon. Time for a snooze on the sofa and watched the recording of the F1.

3,300 miles in 6 days, but I genuinely would go again tomorrow and do it all again. Ill happily do the exact same trip again next year. If you think you can keep up (driving and vodka and cokes !!) let me know and Ill let you know if we do it again next year!!

Great write up. Sounds like you had a blast. Good on ya. Those type of blasts become fewere and fewer unless you are mad and commited that is?

Know the roads through the Tirol (to Insbruck ) as we ski in that area;- Was on hols there at the same time and found a guy fixing up and Elise in Hopfgarten;- Just wanted my Exige to go for a Blat through really
